In the Rent movie will they be lipsynching? How is that word spelled? LOL

Not sure. They could be, but I think they aren't.
They recorded the songs in a studio...however, as they filmed them they sang along for real, although those are not the versions we will be hearing
yup, they always record in a studio...so they always "lipsync" (forgive spelling)
That's how it's always done - if people actually lipsynched on film instead of singing along with the recording, it wouldn't look like they were singing.

I thought they recorded it. Thanks for the spelling.
I think for the most part, like everyone said, that they first recorded the songs in the studio and than sang along as they filmed. However, I don't remember where I
read/heard it... but I think Idina's "Over the Moon" is the ony song that wasn't pre-recorded and is actually the film version. I'm not saying this is true (if it is .. someone tell me), it's just what i've heard.

All the songs are prerecorded for the soundtrack and tracks in the film. To get the sense of 'live' singing throughout the film instead of making it music video type lipsynching being very fake. They were singing the songs throughout filming. for OTM, to get the facial expressions and random stuff, Idina did live takes of it while filming. But it will be the recorded song that will be in the movie. Wasn't there an audio going around of Anthony singing What You Own during the filming in NY and Rosario doing Without You?
Well, OTM has a lot more dialogue than singing in it....

Yes, and like everyone has said, the tracks recorded in the studio before filming were played while the actors sang along to them during the shooting. The live singing won't be heard on film, but this procedure will avoid the actors looking like they're lip-synching, in terms of vocal musculature, etc. What you hear on those recordings, wherever they've ended up, is a combination of the soundtrack and the live singing.

I hope it's as you say Emcee... I remember in Evita, everything was pre-recorded and the actors sung along during filming to make it seem as if it were "live", except the death scene where Madonna sung it live, and you could tell the difference in the audio quality. If I'm not mistaken, one of the songs in the Bette Midler "Gypsy" was also "live", not lip-sync to a track, and it was obvious. Not bad, just obvious - - with a different quality.
'tis - it's been addressed many times. I obviously can't promise that there aren't any songs that weren't recorded during the shoot (like OTM, for example - maybe), but I do know that the reason they're using this technique is so the singing looks real. Like, in Phantom, the actors' mouths were mostly in synch with the words, but their muscles looked too relaxed to really be believably singing most of the time. But, if they sound different or something, I guess that's what voice overs and editing and things are for.
You have to lip sync when doing that kind of stuff in film...it would be almost impossible to mix the sound well post production if you didn't pre record the music.
We'll see how well they it's done. The sound mixing in Evita is QUITE terrible, but that was some years ago :0)

THANK YOU! There was something about the Phantom singing that has been bothering me...that is it!
Because everybody involved is incredibly invested in seeing RENT made, I am sure that if anything happens / looks weird / sounds bad they will fix it, even if it means more $$$.
I'm sure it's a little more than that bothering you about the Phantom singing. HA.
Maybe it's just me being way too picky, but I would hope "Over the Moon" was not recorded in the studio before they shot it because it is more of a scene than a song, and the timing can change with each performance of it. Subtle things that may make the comedy work better. So I hope they recorded it after they knew what she was exactly what she was doing.
And yes...I hope the sound mixing is good. I hate when it's obvious that they've changed toe pre-recorded track. I don't want to be reminded they're not really singing.

minor threadjacking...who in Phantom actually sang their own songs? I heard that a couple people's voices were dubbed...?
Idina Menzel has done the number quite a few times in her lifetime. I have faith that it won't be a huge issue.
Only Minnie Driver was dubbed in the Phantom movie. Everyone else sang their own part.
