I Just bought the studio cast recording and have absolutely fallen in love with the score and the studio cast. Why didn't the show make it for a Broadway bow?
The music is beautiful. I'm also puzzled as to why it didn't make the transition. It would have been a beautiful show. What a cast.
I don't believe the cast was ever headed to Broadway. Sierra is obviously too old to play the part in a stage version, but just fine for a concept recording. I believe they wanted to bring it to Broadway at one point, but obviously had trouble fining investors. It's a great score, but they did take some liberties with some of the details from the book.
I do think it's Lippa's most interesting score thus far, though it peaks with the opening number. If he could truly work on refining and elevating the rest of the score, he could finally have something strong to put on Broadway.
It did run in Seattle with the usual; comments about a possible transfer, didn't it?
