Anyone know of any shows available on DVD or VHS that are taped from the stage? I know of Into the Woods and Sunday in the Park with George, and the new Ten Commandments, but any others?
Sweeney Todd, with George Hearn and Angela Lansbury was taped for TV in 1982.
I also believe that there was a PBS broadcast of Light in the Piazza.
And the revival cast of Kiss Me, Kate did a PBS Great Performances, as well. Same with Candide (but that was a concert)
Annnd, that's all I can think of at the moment. Hope that helped!

CRAZY FOR YOU
PLAY IT ON!
Were all broadcast as part of the "Live at Lincoln Center" series, but can never be sold on DVD.
In addition of the Lansbury/Hearn SWEENEY, there is also the concert version available on DVD with Patti LuPon, Neil Patrick Harris, Victoria Clark, etc.
The FOLLIES concert from Avery Fisher Hall is available.
DEATH OF A SALESMAN with Dennehey and Franz and OUR TOWN with Paul Newman were both taped, and OUR TOWN is available on DVD - not sure about SALESMAN.
Aside from INTO THE WOODS and SUNDAY IN THE PARK, PASSION is also available on DVD.
SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE, JEKYLL AND HYDE, and PUTTING IT TOGETHER were all recorded and released on video/DVD.
In the 80's, the Rex Smith/Kevin Kline/Linda Rondstadt PIRATES OF PENZANCE was recorded and is available on DVD.
The Broadway production of VICTOR/VICTORIA is also available on DVD.
For some older ones, check out www.broadwaytheatrearchive.com - they have many great, great things.

Thanks. Keep um coming if there are anymore. I wouldn't mind seeing the Patti/Neil Patrick Harris Sweeney.
SOPHISTICATED LADIES is available as well.
Once Upon A Mattress with Carol Burnett.
Yeah it was the movie, but it was done like a stage show.
Or maybe it was the stage show and my music teacher lies.
Anyone know if there's a Les Mis taping besides the 10th Anniversary Concert?
ONCE UPON A MATTRESS was not taped on stage - it was a TV movie.
Someone mentioned CATS, which wasn't taped on stage (it was a set built for the video), but if you want to go that route, CATS, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT, and JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR are available in that format.
The only video of LES MIS for sale is the concert.
The original London cast of SOUTH PACIFIC (with Mary Martin and Juanita Hall) was taped and broadcast on TV, but it was never released. It's fascinating to watch. It's not for sale, but there are copies out there.
Thanks for the confirmation =).
also the latest "Oklahoma!" revival was filmed alla "Cats"
Yes, though OKLAHOMA! looks exactly as it did on stage - where CATS does not always.
Additionally, the original London cast of TABOO was filmed, and is available on DVD.
CRAZY FOR YOU was recorded at Papermill Playhouse, not Lincoln Center.
Yes, I am aware. I didn't say it was. It was broadcast the same way that LIVE AT LINCOLN CENTER is broadcast.

go to www.broadwayarchives.com and click on "list DVD's" at the top
They have DVD's of mostly television broadcasts of plays (from PBS, etc.)- some musicals, as well as regular film versions.
In addition to those already listed:
Our House
Jerry Springer the Opera
Kiss Me Kate (revival)
Acorn Antiques
were all taped live on stage in London and released on DVD
Five Guys Named Moe
Buddy
were released on VHS in the UK in the early 1990s
Putting it Together
Elaine Stritch at Liberty
Does the 'Hey Mr Producer' concert count?
I think that you should be able to get the above 'UK only' releases from Dress Circle

Many of the shows listed above were broadcast on TV, but are NOT commercially available on tape or DVD. You'd have to find someone who taped it off the TV when it aired.
Yes, many concerts and such things were professionally filmed, but never released, for instance something like the 2003 Chess concert or the Hair Actor's Fund concert....I wish they would release stuff like that...if they bothered filming it in the first place, I say it should be widely available.
You can sometimes get stuff like that the Flea Market I believe, but it is a huge shame that these things aren't more widely available...
Amazon sells the Broadway Theater Archive titles (they used to have a site of their own, but I cant find it anymore.)

MANY treasures here, my faves are Uncommon Women and Others by Wasserstein
and
For Colored Girls by Ntozake Shange
also Alice at the Palace, Liz Swados' take on Alice in Wonderland starring Meryl Streep (PROVING she could and should play Lovett!)
From what I remember of my Cats video (I only watched it once) and my trip to Cats (once when I was about 10) the set seemed fairly similar to the London set.
The set is nearly identical, yes. There are some staging changes and song cuts.
