That was the impression I got also, dramarama3. I took it as him saying that if he couldn't arrive a basic melody/structure in a half an hour (per song) then he figured the song was becoming too complex and tried something else.

Idiot, I'm sure that you aren't an idiot, but there is no such word as "leant." You probably mean that you lent (if you're in the UK) or loaned (if you're in the US) your coat to Finn. Some odd grammarians hold that "loan" cannot be used as a verb, but they're shouting into the wind on that one.
