Little People

Spider-I think the song does have a purpose.
It shows Gav's determination to do what he believes is right.

" Wondering, why the heck does Gavroche have a Cockney accent in FRANCE?!"
I have thought of two reasons:
1.) The show is Brittish
2.) Cockney is an easier accent to use and to understand when you are a little kid on a large stage.

Posted: 12/19/04 at 10:27pmthe entire cast used british accents. gavroche was a street urchin, so naturally his accent would be lower-class cockney.

Posted: 12/19/04 at 11:52pmInteresting note about cockney accents in "Les Mis." I remember when The New York Times reviewed the show during it's 10th anniversay, the critic (Brantley, I'm assuming) criticized Nick Wyman for using a cockney accent as Thenardier, saying that the show takes place in "Hugo's Paris, not Dickens' London." However, when I went to go see the show, Wyman was no longer using the cockney and was just using an American accent. He played the role for several years (gotta pay the bills)--I wonder if he stopped using the cockney accent because of the review, or just because he wanted a change of pace during a long run.

I didn't think it was shortened....
But I think it's cute... yeah the accent annoys me tho.

This has always been one of my favourite songs in the show. I am very sad that it was shortened, because I have te full song and I think it's completely adorable. The only thing about it that bothers me is this:
Why does even Gavroche get a solo, and not Enjolras?

On the Original Paris Cast (the BEST cast album of this show overall in my opinion), that song has more immediacy, as he's singing about David and Goliath. Though, he's also singing about Voltaire and Rousseau. That is one well-educated urchin. The song is far shorter also.
If you speak ANY French or are just curious, get this version! The poetry of the language makes the music that much more beautiful.

Yes,
The Broadway version of the show cut out Little People - leaving the little bicker btwn Gavroche and Javert. In the London version, they had the whole song, well, on the OLC at least.
The OFC - La Faute A Voltaire that's the name of the Original Little People...
