**********SPOILERS***************
It seemed to me while watching the movie that they were prepping for a happy ending (unconsciously or not) by making Seymour less complicit in the earlier deaths (particularly Mushnik's). In any case, I think the happy ending works well, and I accept Frank Oz's rationale for it--it's perfectably acceptable onstage to watch actors being devoured by an obviously fake cloth plant, knowing they'll be back in a minute for a curtain call; it's quite a different matter to watch movie actors being devoured in closeup by a frightening, real-looking monster plant--it destroyed the lighthearted, parodic tone.

The first ending cost most of the film's budget.
