They're attached to another set piece. I believe it's the railing on stage right that Meg and Jo walk next to when they make their entrance in that scene.

I called the Merriam Theater yesterday the have rush for:
Tonight
Thursday
Friday
Sunday
I saw it last night. The best word for it is "pleasant." It was good, but not great. The songs are kind of hit or miss, some of them are very nice and some could have been cut completely. Susan Spencer was on as Jo and she was very likable. She sounded a lot like Sutton Foster, which was kind of weird. I'm not sure if it was her or the sound system, but her voice wasn't very clear. I'm thinking it was the sound system because a couple others sounded like that, too. Maureen McGovern is fantastic and she has the best moments and song in the show, "Days of Plenty." Although, I really don't think she deserves final bow. The show itself begins to feel a little long near the end. I can see why it didn't run on Broadway very long because it's just not that strong of a show. Still, I enjoyed the show and was glad I saw it.
I have the same problem to listen to her voice clearly in Baltimore.
Do you know where the stagedoor at the Merriam is? I haven't been to that theatre in a long time.

My family saw it in Chicago, and they enjoyed it. I skipped it!

i saw it tonight in Philly and was bored out of my mind... terrible show, bland music, terrible lyrics, direction, everything... the actors were terrible and all one level.. "oh, beth died"... wat was this?? there was no motivation at all to sing songs.. it was just like here's my line, here's my song... SO BORING... I saw the Jo understudy and her singing voice is nice-- but her speaking voice is sooooo grating and one level.. terrible actress.. The one sister's voice had a crazy, distracting vibratto. Maureen sang very well and was very natural.. Her Day's of Plenty was great, but it still didn't save the show... This show is truly crap. I guess the only good things about it really were Sutton and Maureen on Bway...
Go see Color Purple if you want to see a good translation of a book/movie.

I think I know what you're talking about with the vibratto. It was kind of odd, but it worked for me. I guess I was going in already liking the show, but I wasn't really bored at all. I was really moved by it. I think I just could see myself and my situation in the character of Jo - something I didn't expect, considering this show is marketed towards mothers and their daughters. I thought most all of the songs worked for me. Of course some of them aren't really "needed" - but its a musical so of course they're going to sing.
Which Jo did you see?

I saw whoever played Julie. I love the movie and the book... but there was no emotion in these characters.. the dialogue and lyrics and everything...just corny. How many times did they say I love you? I saw Julie as Joe and her voice was fine but her acting was really annoying and one level.. she just sounded like a little girl the entire time. I remmeber this one part where she screams something about Beth randomly and everyone around me started to laugh. it's a shame. I was really disapointed.
Maureen was great, but she could not save this boring show. And whoever played the professor decided to lose his accent in the middle of the show and then bring it back. Apparently he was supposed to be German but we didn't know where the hell he was from.
I saw it in San Diego, and loved it. Even though the theater sucked, and the audience was barbaric, to say the least, it was a wonderful production! GO SEE IT!
I saw whoever played Julie.
There is no character named Julie. Did you mean Julie Foldesi as Jo?
Quibbler, the reason Maureen gets the final bow in the touring company is because many people are going to see the show simply because she is in it. She's really one of their best marketing strategies for many who are already aware of her work.

And to be very blunt, the only reason the show's touring is because McGovern's in it. Otherwise, it would've gone straight to resident.

I didn't like the current Laurie's take on the character. It seemed as if he didn't know what to do with his hands. His voice was good, considering I can't stand Danny Gurwin's (sp?) on the recording, I was kinda up for anything.
Looking back, I can sort of understand that all the actor's were on the same level. They didn't really show a progress of time. The hair didn't get longer or short (except for Jo) or they didn't age vocally or anything. It didn't bother me when i was watching it, but I guess it could only enhance what is already being performed.

speaking of age progression... one of my favorite things about Sutton's performance as Jo was how much her body language and the way she carried herself changed as Jo grew older. I really thought Sutton did a great job with the movement work in the show.
And Sutton is so vivacious and full of energy. Every line she delivers is meaningful. She gets so into character and so close with her sisters onstage. It was great to watch.
"chick show."
gee, talk about an archaic, insulting smack........
Oh, I know why McGovern gets the last bow, but I still don't think she should.

I just thought it was accurate.
