With the lack of buzz for Little Women and the enormous amount of buzz Spamalot has already received (and will undoubtably receive when it opens in Chicago), it's more than likely Little Women could be forgotten in a similar manner as Jane Eyre when The Producers opened. And Yazbek could get another 2nd place ribbon as he did with The Full Monty. It's too bad when perfectly respectable shows close earlier than they should due to one overly-hyped hit. Though I expect Spamalot will be great, I hope it doesn't dominate the season.

roobiej-Don't worry, this production is very imaginative and different from other Little Womens I ahve seen, so I think you will be able to sit through it!

Well for one thing, the critics better love this show or else they will have disliked every other new musical to hit broadway this season lol.

I would say go see it. I really enjoyed it, especially Maureen McGovern (LOVED her). Sutton needs to tone down her acting in the first act, but second act she is perfect. Here is my review https://forum.broadwayworld.com/readmessage.cfm?thread=462196#465038

Wasn't Maureen AMAZING?! She WAS Marmee... absolutely brilliant.

As for Sutton's acting... I saw the show this Saturday, and Sutton didn't overact at all (so I'm guessing they must have worked on that during the week - obviously a good thing!). If anyone overacted, it was Amy McAlexander... which worked during the first act, but by the second it just became irritating.

They must have because my fiance (who doesn't know that much about theatre) said to me, "This is the broadway star, right?" I mean even I was rolling my eyes because I thought an amature could do better. But, like I said the second act she was brilliant. Maureen.....BRILLIANT does not even begin to describe her. I gave her the biggest applause and got her autograph, YAY. Amy, I liked although no one else did. She was a little annoying but nothing I couldn't handle.

I definitely believe you about Sutton overacting. I've seen her do it before - but I guess those triple threats can't be perfect in everything, lol. She's definitely a singer/dancer before an actress, that's for sure. And there's really little dancing in this show so she's really going to have to reach for the acting and work on that.

Haha, Maureen came out while I was talking to Sutton and sat down beside my mom... and at one point while Sutton was speaking to me, I glanced over and Maureen McGovern and my mom were just sitting there talking. Like they were old friends. It was... ridiculously strange. And my mother (whom I dragged with me to see it) had NO idea Maureen was in it until she came out on stage and she absolutely went crazy. So it was REALLY funny.

I think my thing with Amy was moreso her acting in the second act. I just felt her characterization was a little off.

How did you feel about Meg and Beth? I think Jenny Powers is terrific and insanely beautiful, but she got the usualy Meg treatment - sort of the pretty one and nothing else, you know? Megan McGinnis was a good Beth, but I'd like to see more development in her character in terms of being the shy one and the sickly one. Maybe a little more intensity surrounding her death? (But not overdone, of course. That would definitely weigh the show down.)

I agree about Meg and Beth being underdeveloped, especially Beth. I think her uplifting spirit should have been more present during the show. That is the best thing about her character that differentiates her from the rest. She always has a good way to look at a situation. And I think it should have showed her die. I know that sounds morbid, but it would have been a great way to see how everyone, especially Jo handles it. I mean it was just like, there she is and now everyone is going on with their life. But, the song they sing at the beach was the most beautiful song in the show. My fiance and I were balling.

Maureen is such a doll. Like I said in my review, I felt so sorry for her because she came out and the adults said a few things to her but as soon as Sutton came out, everyone ignored her. I took that opportunity to reach in and get her autograph and told her how brilliant she was. I didn't get anyone else's because of the stupid young girls and their mothers. Grrrr.

Yes - exactly! I was looking for Beth's uplifting spirit, and it was never there. Beth is the ray of hope in Little Women, you know? She always believes that tomorrow is going to be beautiful - she's never bitter. There's always a sunny side to every situation, and that's one reason I have ALWAYS loved Beth's character; because I can totally identify with that. And I agree with them showing her death - or at least alluding to it better.

Ack, I totally know about the Maureen situation. Sutton was MOBBED by all of those aforementioned 12 year olds when she came out, and Maureen came out in the middle of it. So everyone was still ooohing and aaahing over Sutton. My mother and I felt much the same way that you do - simply because Maureen is SO established (and my gosh, how many times have I seen her in "Airplane!"?? Hahaha). But she was so humble and gracious, and my mom was very excited because it was her "first famous person" haha. I really think Maureen has a good chance of walking away with the Best Supporting Tony - or at least a nom.

Me too. I got the strongest emotions pulled out of me from Maureen, especially during the song that she sings about her husband and the song she sings to Jo when she is upset about Beth dying. I mean, WOAH. I just wanted to run on stage and give her the biggest hug and I have never got that feeling abotu anyone in a musical(except for Collins singing about Angel's death of course.

) She just owned that stage and showed Sutton and others what a true actor/singer should be. Gosh, I wish I could see it again, just to see Maureen. She has cd's out and I think I may pick up a few just to hear her gorgeous voice again.

And Beth is my favorite character too. I have never read the book (I had my fiance for the commentary on that one) but I have seen the movie. They really do need to change what we have said before it gets to broadway (in my opinion). My girlfriend was upset that they changed some of the characters mannerisms from the book (especially Jo, Laurie, and the Prof.). I have never read the book, as previously stated, so I couldn't make a judgement on that.

I also wanted Beth to die on stage! It could have been a really beautiful scene. My mom did not like Jo's mannerisms towards the professor. She thought Jo was too brash. I also think Meg, Laurie, and especially Beth were underdeveloped.

I'm glad to know that a few others share a lot of these opinions. I think they were my biggest qualms.

Your fiance is right... I noticed the most differences in Laurie, I think. His character was vastly underdeveloped from all the other film adaptations I have seen, which was shocking because usually it seems Little Women is based so much around Jo and Laurie and the "Will they or won't they?" get together sort of thing. But at the same time, I was glad they developed Jo and the Professor's relationship a bit more.

The biggest problem she had was the way Jo and Laurie acted. She said that in the books, they were young but not as giddy and immature as the musical made them out to be. I could see where she was coming from because they acted like they were 13 years old and especially in the Civil War time, they would not have acted like that. She said the professor wasn't as "You annoy me, go away" as the musical made him out to be, too.
