I do wish Fun Home could be filmed. The in-the-round staging would be a real challenge, but could make for something far more dynamic than the usual stage taping. How was it that the commercial Company revival got funded? Between that and Passing Strange, I had hoped this would become more common.

It was for PBS' Great Performances series so while I don't know the answer to your question, I assume it was privately funded through charitable contributions. Aside from PBS (and its regional sister network, Thirteen/WNET), only one other entity is credited as a producer, Ellen M. Krass Productions, and I think she just handled production management: http://www.pbs.org/kqed/demonbarber/play/ellenmkrass.html

ITW and Company were PBS. Passing Strange was a commercial production.

I wish more smart directors would follow Spike's lead and capture shows as films. I think Passing Strange is one of the best movie musicals ever made, honestly. It works as an actual movie.

I agree with you Scary, however I am pretty sure it was not even remotely successful.

Considering the fact I could watch it for free on demand only a few months after its broadcast on HBO and subsequent digital/physical release, I would definitely agree with that. I can only imagine how much money they lost on that filming.

Not releasing shows that shuts down is a waste and personally the equity, union argument makes no sense when almost soundtrack of every Broadway show is released. Some musicals have ten to even more recordings that one can purchase.
To view She Loves me on BroadwayHD one would have to pay a thicket which cost around 9 dollars. I would have paid even more to view this broadcast, cause it is a way for me to watch a show when I needn't have to travel to New York.
Yes we do get a lot of touring productions here, but during the past year only one was worth it. Others have been so badly scaled down that were almost equal to regional presentations.
After spending money to try and watch the performance that everyone here seemed to be boasting about, I ended wasting airfares and this is because these shows decided to shut down. Of course it was only the result of bad management, but it left me with a lesson to never travel to see a show.

And the performers are paid for the audio recording, as they have to be paid for a video recording. I'm not sure what you think makes no sense.

The show decided to shut down because it was a scheduled part of a non-profit theatres season, not because of mismanagement. I can understand why you would be unhappy to have made a trip for something that ended up being recorded, but I have two reactions: first, what you saw in person is not the same as seeing it on a screen. second, you have made a good argument in support of not recording shows because, as almost every commercial producer knows, it is bad for business and bad for the theatre.

I think Danster was talking about other shows that closed before his trip maybe?
I bought my ticket for the live stream immediately when I learned about it because I didn't think I would get out to the city to see the show, but when I had the opportunity to get a ticket for the live performance I was happy to pay that as well. Of course I know I'm not representative of the entire population.

The show I was referring too was not She Loves me, which I wouldn't have had the chance to see, but Bright Star and Lincoln's center king and I. Everybody on here was talking about how good Marrin Mazzie is and that is why I wanted to see it. Same goes for Bright Star which I desperately would like to see.
In reply to your question I wouldn't have had a problem to go see She Loves me, even tough it was being broadcast live. I am sure it is fantastic.

@Danster, thanks for the clarification. I was confused by what you wrote.
@MichelleCraig, I wonder if sales include copies that were given as member benefits at PBS.
