I spent the last few hours looking at clips from previous years. Wondering who would be the performers for Liza. Possibilities include Chita, Michael Feinstein, Alan Cummings, Robert Deniro, Joel Grey, and Ben Vereen. Then they can have a chorus consisting of all the gypsys she has hired throughout the years. The number of queens that could be on that stage is mind blowing.

Shouldn't be for a bit, DAME, they historically announce in September or so, around Labor Day.
Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

Dame, the honourees for last year were announced on Sept. 12/12...so looks like we still have a while to go.

So this gets announced within the next 2 weeks? No? Still rooting for Liza. Even rooting for Carol. But in any event.. I hope there is a good diva involved. Always makes these things fun for me.

Last year's honorees were announced on September 12th, so I wonder if we should be hearing something either Thursday or Friday of this week.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

I'm wondering if some prospective nominees won't turn down the honor this year because the awards are so closely linked to the president.

From what I understand;  the honor and ceremony have nothing to do with the president.  And not all presidents have chosen to attend.  Certainly the presence of the cheeto  dims the light on these beautiful events.

Dame, in it's 40 years, there have only been 3 times the president did not attend. Also, there is a reception at the White House before the gala performance which links the awards directly to the President.

Mavis Staples, who won last year, even said at that time she would have declined if Trump were president

Thanks for the link.  There was a news segment right before this years broadcast where they interviewed I don't know who from the honors and they said the president is not required to attend and that the honors go on with our without him.  I will try to find a link.
