Posted: 8/16/03 at 8:11pmI thought her "croaking" was HORRIBLE. You're not supposed to croak when you sing.

But you see, Sondheimfreak... that's Ann's STYLE. It FIT the Roxie roll, and it just worked. If she were singing something more melodic, than yes, I would agree that the "croaking" would not be appropriate.
I also agree that Ann went a little too "Gwen Verdon"-like with her interpretation of this Roxie role revival, but I absolutely love it anyway.
I would have LOVED to have seen her slink across the stage ala Fosse style. That is what she is best at! ( :

*sigh* I <3heart<3 Ann Reinking. She was my childhood idol
Love that woman. Watched her in All That Jazz and Annie yesterday... she is SO freaking talented!
Can I be the next Ann Reinking when I grow up?

Posted: 8/17/03 at 11:48amSorry. You're posts to explain her did no good. My opinion stays. She is very talented, but I don't like her in "Chicago."

Nobody was ever trying to change your opinion -- just stating their own.
And I have to agree with ARF on this one, Ann really did fit the roll of Roxie with the singing and the dancing... and honestly, if you're seeing Annie in ANYTHING, you're not seeing her to hear her sing... you're seeing her to see her dance. She's a dancer first, singer second, simple as that. I can think of a few Roxie's off the top of my head who are better in one department than another, and they were still wonderful.
Aside from which, Ann comes off a lot more hoarse on the cd than live, imho.

Posted: 8/17/03 at 3:32pmAnn Reinking is a great dancer. She's a great actress. She can sing really well. But I don't like what she does with "Chicago." I prefer it to be sung like in the film, than "croaked", Teacheroftheatre's word not mine, like she does. She's a very talented person and this is the last post I'm going to make about her and Chicago.

Just to clarify, my whole post wasn't directed at you, sondheimfreak -- just the first line. I was just chiming in on the topic since I had yet to do so

Getting back to the dance style. I haven't seen Melanie (I live in Australia now) but I did see Liza and Verdon and Ann's Roxie's (the revival version) didn't notice any changes with the choreography between Liza and Verdon, I think she did most of it because I don't remember Verdon dancing as much in Chicago as she did in other productions or as much as Chita did in the show.
Chita's role required more dancing than Verdon's. I know Liza did the cartwheel so I assume she did the rest. As for Ann I didn't like her in the revival. She is such a great dancer, but was trying to imitate Gwen and did a poor job of it. I don't know what happened to her voice, sounded like she smoked a lot. She sounded so sexy in All That Jazz and other productions.
