Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor is very good!
BG is definitely a show whose music needs repeated listens. And the quality of the recording is tragic. But it has some amazing songs.
"All The Love I Have" is in my ALW top 5
But "I Like You" has to be the most insipid song he has ever written.
My personal favorite from 'The Beautiful Game' is 'God's own country'. Such a moving song.

I have;
PHANTOM (Only Selections, Colm Wilkinson)
SUNSET BLVD. (Concept)
STARLIGHT EXPRESS (London)
EVITA (2006 & Film)
WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND (London)
But I must admit, I really want The Beautiful Game, JCS, and the proper London Recording of Phantom. I have an awful lot of rubbish, as you can see.
There is no concept recording for Sunset Boulevard, as far as I know. I suppose you mean the 1993 London cast recording with Patti LuPone.

On Julian Lloyd Webbers new cd Michael Ball is singing Unexpected Song being accompanied by JLW And it is beautiful
Evita with Patti, because she is God.
The Australian Jesus Christ Superstar recording is probably the most kickass of all the ones I've heard. (OBCR, movies, Lonon, etc). I consider it essential.
The Beautiful Game was fantastic. Such a shame that it didnt last that long.
My other favourite is Tell me on a Sunday, but not the horrendous Broadway version or even the verison on the Song and Dance OLC, but the original album Tell me on a Sunday, that I believe Marti Webb recorded with Webber & Don Black way before Song & Dance.
Well I pretty much have every official recording of ALW - being a huge fan of his, so its hard to say what is a "must have" although Aspects of Love, especailly now that it was remastered would definitely be on the list
But The Beautiful Game discussion on here got me thinking about that show. The ironic thing was that it closed Sept 1, 2001. i've heard it was redone in Hungary (I think) and saw clips of it online which looked phenomenal. It looks like they did a more elaborate staging with a huge cast. The Carsens London production (which I never saw) was lauded as innovative, but maybe it was too innovative with the subject matter being tough to deal with.
Also - I heard that for the production in Hungary, that ALW wrote new songs for it -hope one day there's a revival or new production in UK or US

Aspects of Love is my personal fave--I have complaints with lyrics and some elements but still whenever I listen to it I fall back in love with the score.
As for "essential" if you wanna have a good cast recording database I think you should have at leats one recording of Evita and Jesus Christ Superstar (JCS is prob my next fave of his scores). For many of the other shows you can get by with the shorter recordings--ie I know many fans will egt mad at me but I find everything I need from Phantom on the one disc canadian cast album (and prefer Rebecca to Sarah)--ditto with the Canadian Diahan Caroll recordingof Sunset.

Just a heads up - the OLC of Starlight Express and the complete OBC recording of EVITA are now on iTunes. Still waiting on Sunet Boulevard though!
