Patti is also featured on ALW's latest 60th birthday compilation with 'New Ways to Dream' from Sunset.

It is indeed Patti who sings that track and they credited Glenn Close and Alan Campbell by mistake. It's Patti and Kevin Anderson from the London cast recording. There is also one other mistake: song 1, CD 2. It says it's sung by El Debarge when in fact it's the version from the original London cast sung by Ray Shell.

Keeping my fingers crossed for ALW and the show. Let's see how the whole thing works out. If it sucks, I'll be the first one to say so. The least one can do is not to bash beforehand.

In a radio interview Cameron Mackintosh gave to Elaine Paige, he said she was the first choice for the role of Fantine, but was busy with her role in CHESS at that time, so she couldn't do it.

Each of the recordings has something interesting in its own right. The OBC is among my favorites beacause of Patti, but I really don't like Mandy Patinkin's singing or Bob Gunton rolling his 'r'. I also prefer a Che with a deeper voice. The concept album with Julie Covington is interesting because it has the extra lyrics (in EVA'S SONNET and LAMENT in particular), plus the score is played by a much bigger orchestra than in the later recordings (except in the movie soundtrack). Thanks for this wonderful review, Jay. It really gives us who live in Europe something to regret since we are not able to see it. Still, Patti said recently that she hopes she'll take the show to London next year, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Re Sondheim vs. ALW, I don't think the two of them see each other as rivals; there is plenty of room for them both. Sondheim stated: "I don't write shows to be successful. Nobody does. Not even Andrew Lloyd Webber...The point with Andrew is that people just happen to like what he likes."

Re The Pink Floyd episode: Ray Repp claimed Webber plagiarized his 1978 song titled “Till You” and used it for the the title track of "Phantom". The same song Pink Floyd has accused Webber of using a fragment of "Echoes" for? So which is it? Did he plagiarize Repp or Pink Floyd? Can't be both now can it? The German cast recording of SUNSET BOULEVARD with Helen Schneider and Uwe Kröger is awesome and is a must have for the fans of the show.

I haven't seen the show on stage, but the cast recording is great, I love the score. It would be interesting to see how it works on stage.

I just saw the Phantom last Saturday in London, almost two years since seeing it there for the first time. Everything George95 said about the Broadway production can be applied to London one. The show is still fresh and lively as ever, as is the audience response. Ramin Karimloo, who took over the title role last autumn, is simply brilliant. Strong stage presence and the exceptional vocal range. If you have a chance to catch him as the Phantom, do not miss it.

No need for all this premature negative comments. Let the man do his thing. If it sucks, I'll be the first to say so. As for the lyricist, ALW mentioned earlier it will be David Zippel.
