Does anyone have any ideas of a song that tells a story, in kind of a patter like rhythm? For example Kansas City from Oklahoma! But I need a song for a tenor. If anyone could help, it'd be great.
First patter song that comes to mind is Franklin Shepard Inc. From Merrily We Roll Along by Sondheim. I kind of thought Tonight at Eight From She Loves Me would be good. I mean it's not that tenory though. although it is one of those songs that really isn't SUNG SUNG. You could get away with it. Any other suggestions?
What Am I Doing? from CLOSER THAN EVER has some long lines in the verses that might be nice for a tenor, although it hardly qualifies as a patter song. Interesting song, though
most of Jaime's songs from the Last Five Years are for tenors and are stories as well. i don't know if they are patter songs like you said, but they are definitely good for tenors who can sing them.
i second jason robert brown and sondheim... franklin shepard inc is probably the king... i'll try and think of some more i've done over the years.
oh... the one i just performed at a recital which is AMAZING and probably one of the best songs i've ever performed is 'finishing the hat' from sunday in the park with george. it is simply magnificent.
Thanks a lot you've helped me out a ton..I was leaning towards the Frank Shepard Inc. song from Merrily We Roll Along, since I love Sondheim, but I'm having a hard time finding the music for it. My school's music library doesn't seem to have that song. I have a voice lesson tomorrow where I have to learn/sing this story song, and have to perform it on Thursday (Yeah, ten points for waiting until the last minute). So, does anyone know where I could find it, or have any other last minute suggestions, anything would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!
that song will be very hard to find for tomorrow. if you love sondheim try finishing the hat from sunday. it's in the tenors musical theatre anthology. i think it's in volume 2, but i'm not positive. it really is a great story song, so much acting to do with it too.
