Okay. My parents gave me my choice of a Broadway show for my graduation, and I have absolutely no idea what to pick. As of August 8 I'll have seen all the requisite teen-age girls shows-Hairspray, Legally, Blonde, and Wicked, but I want to see something new and refreshing. I've also seen Phantom and Mary Poppins. I've narrowed my choices down to this. What should I do? Any other suggestions would be appreciated, too!
see Chicago
see Grease
wait for October and see Young Frankenstein (big Sutton fan, but I hate Young Frankenstein)
go see Sweeney Todd on tour (HUGE Sweeney fan, but none of the cities are really that close to me)
see Grey Gardens on tour
see Les Miz
see Spelling Bee
see Drowsy
cut my losses and see if my parents will let me see Spring Awakening if I beg them enough
and, if all else absolutely fails, I'll go to Phantom again.
I've been thinking about this for two months, otherwise I wouldn't be bugging you people.

Don't see Phantom. It's the show that got me interested in musical theatre, I've seen it a million times, it's near and dear to my heart, and last month I saw it, hoping to rekindle my love affair with that show.
The result? I was bitterly disappointed and have no desire to see it again until the cast changes again.

Grey Gardens on tour won't be for a while.
Is it high school that you graduated from? If it is, you should be able to handle Spring Awakening.
No, grammar school. And I'm in love with Spring Awakening, read the play a million times, and I know I can handle it. I'm just not sure I can handle my parents sitting on both sides of me!

You just graduated fifth grade?
Omigod, no! LOL Catholic school people! Eigth grade.
Uh, well if you don't want your parents seeing Spring Awakening with you, they could perhaps have a nice dinner together or see another show while you're seeing Spring Awakening.
no grease.
no phantom.
no chicago.
les miserables is a wonderful show. i would recommend it to anyone. im not sure about the cast right now.
sweeney todd or grey gardens would be great but as you said, sweeney is not very close to you and grey gardens wont start for another year or so.
drowsy and spelling bee are perfect if you are looking for a fun theatre experience.
but id say beg for spring awakening. it is the way to go.
[but i havent seen any of these productions, so what do i know]
See Curtains! It's so fun :) My whole family saw it together, and everyone found something they enjoyed. In my opinion, it's worth it to see the current cast as well.

The Grey Gardens tour would have been my first choice, but since it's not starting anytime soon, I'd pick either Drowsy or Spelling Bee.
I think I'm gonna beg and grovel for Spring Awakening. Of course, if I get to go, there's the chance that my parents will take me out of there and all three of us will be embarrassed, but I have to at least try.
I don't know if you are only looking for a Broadway show or not, but if you are willing to go the Off-Broadway direction Forbidden Broadway is always a good bet if you are looking for a good time.
ok...so all of these other people have given their advice. But mine's the one u should really listen to lol. SEE SPELLING BEE!!!!!!!!! It may not be running for much longer, and you're whole family is gonna die from laughter! It's one of my favorite shows:)
Is Anne Runnolfsson (sp?) still Carlotta in Phantom?
If Spring Awakening doesn't work out for you, then I'd agree with BrianIdol and say Spelling Bee is the way to go!! It's hilarious and fun, and you'll have an amazing time! I took my mom to it a few months ago, and she loved it too. I promise you'll have a great time!
I hope you get to see Spring Awakening though, since it sounds like that's the show you're most excited about! Good luck! :)
Yes Ms. Runolfsson is still in Phantom. However I would recommend Les Mis over phantom... Lea Solonga and Drew Sarich are probably worth the ticket alone. If not that I suggest seeing Curtains, or waiting for the fall and seeing Young Frankenstein, which will undoubtedly be very entertaining! It's too bad you missed out on Grey Gardens, but the tour probably won't be for awhile (like everyone has mentioned) so that wouldn't be a wise choice. Since Sweeney isn't coming your way then that option is out too (however if your parents are willing to take you out of your way... then it maybe worth considering... Judy Kaye is supposed to be fantastic as Mrs. Lovett). Spring Awakening will probably be very awkward to watch with your parents sitting with you, especially at your age.
I'm asuming that by graduation you mean high school. Rent the dvd of Xanadu and then go see the Broadway version.
It's a new experience that you won't get from Les Miz (the all too soon revival) or Phantom.
If you're parents wouldn't want you seeing Spring Awakening, I have a feeling Spelling Bee might be awkward as well. Unfortunate Erection, anyone?
But out of those choices, I would say wait for Sweeney Todd. If you can convince your parents to drive that far, it's definitely worth it.
Oh my God, I'd forgotten about this thread. Well, thanks for your help, everybody, but I've already made my decision. I'm going to see Spring Awakening, after absolutely no groveling. Granted, my mom is coming with me, but I've got two months to worry about that.
Have fun. Honestly, I had a similar experience with my mom seeing a production of A CHORUS LINE (not the revival, this was a while ago). Awkward beyond belief! My mom left the theatre. I was very glad because she left before the most awkward stuff.
And my mom wasn't even Catholic.

I went to Catholic school. I feel ya. It seems you want Spring Awakening. I say see it before it becomes fad after running for years. With Rent, I feel that the show has become a fad at times and has lost some of its artistry and heart. Look to see if any Broadway stars are performing. If Lea Salonga is still in Les Miz that is worth considering.
