For my sister’s birthday I wanted to get her tickets to see Hairspray, she has never seen any show “on Broadway”. My original plan, because of scheduling and lack of vacation days, was to just come to NYC for the one night and then drive back home. My question is…would it be too much to try to see two shows, one in the afternoon and one in the evening, in one day? What is the best way to get tickets?

Not at all. I'm doing that this summer as well.
I would say try BroadwayBox.com and get discount tickets, if you don't want to pay full price. What other show were you planning on seeing?
Have fun!!

I don't think it would be too much to see two shows in one day. It just depends how far you live from NYC. If you feel like driving back from NYC after two shows is too much, then go for one. I think that's totally up to you. But I personally don't think it's too much.
I think the best way to get tickets is to use a Broadwaybox discount. You can usually get good seats for a fair price. And you can insure you'll have tickets when you get to the city. TKTS is a good way too, except you can't guarantee what it'll offer.

Yes, it's possible to see 2 shows on the same day -- where a matinee is applicable. You didn't state from WHERE you're driving into the city from. Also, the evening show will end around 10:30pm-ish (depending on the show), so you'll be exhausted and tired to drive back to wherever you're driving back to.

Not really sure which other show to see. She really wanted to see Hairspray and really can't decide on a second one.
We live about 10 hours away. So, we are going to drive in on a Friday and then drive home on Sunday morning.

When I make it to NYC, I go to 2 shows a day on Saturdays and Wednesday, even Sundays when they are playing.
Of the shows I've seen, I bet SPELLING BEE would be a great choice. Of the shows I haven't seen, perhaps CURTAINS, LEGALLY BLONDE, or MARY POPPINS.

You're expecting to drive 10 hours back after a full day in the city?
You're OUT OF YOUR MIND!
Everyone on here has easily done the 2-shows-in-one-day bit (as I have many, many times), but we're staying IN the city -- not driving 10 hours afterwards.
You gotta rethink this or stay in the city overnight.

See Legally Blonde. And don't let the biddies on this board talk you out of it.
(Edit: Legally Blonde if you see a second show. Hairspray is terrific, and in great shape for being 5 years old)

Posted: 7/6/07 at 3:48pmSo two shows on a Saturday, sleeping over, and drving home Sunday? Would that make me less crazy?
#12re: Looking for some guidance…
Posted: 7/6/07 at 3:51pmI've driven 5 hours to the city, done 2 shows and driven back the same day...believe me....about 1/2 way home, you'd give anything to have not seen that second show.

No No, we were planning on staying on Sautrday night. I am pretty sure that seeing two shows and then driving 10 hours home would be craziness.
Now we just have to pick our other show.

But to get here in time for the 2pm matinee on a Saturday when you have a 10-hour drive means, you'd have to leave home at 2am at the latest.
I'm not sure how awake you are going to be.

If you read her other post, she's coming in Friday night.
I say Spelling Bee, out of the shows I've seen.

That was confusing.
Okay, if she's staying somewhere enroute on Friday, then of course, this plan is doable.
Her trouble may be finding a reasonably priced hotel for Saturday night in NYC.

To clear things up (so sorry for all of this confusion)...
Staying somewhere Friday night, maybe somewhere in PA
Two shows on Saturday
Staying at a friend's apartment Saturday night
Driving home Sunday morning
Let me just say, I am very surprised/thankful for the concern for our well being!!

Posted: 7/6/07 at 4:35pmWell, that makes more sense. Then yeah, two shows in one day wouldn't be so bad.

This sounds like a fun birthday!!
I would ditto Born To Reign's suggestion of Legally Blonde for the second show.
Or- there are many people who are loving and obsessed with Xanadu these days (I admit I am not one of them), and if that might be a show that you two would enjoy you should check into the onstage seating of Xanadu for your second show- especially for a birthday treat for someone who is seeing her first shows "on Broadway" that day, onstage seating could be a fun experience.

Sorry for being so needy but...
Would you recommend seeing a show we have seen on tour or seeing something totally new?
#22re: Looking for some guidance…

Well, I would see something new.
I personally suggest A Chorus Line. You really can't go wrong with that. It's a great show.

There've been people who manage to squeeze 3 shows into one day, so your plan to see 2 is not in the least bit unusual.
Before I moved to the area, I took Amtrak in Saturday morning, see 2 shows, stay in hotel, see 1 show, leave Sunday evening.
