Looks Don't Match Song
Looks Don't Match Song#0
Posted: 6/25/05 at 11:19pmI'm having a little problem right now preparing for my upcoming audition for Anything Goes. I worked on my song with my vocie teacher and I'm now practicing it in front of a mirror. I'm auditioning for Hope and I see a problem. I don't look like how Hope should look at all. I'm short, chubby and my face is what I would call "quirky" (I don't really want to call myself ugly.) Because of that, I can't really imagine myself as Hope. However, I don't belt or dance adn my voice suits Hope perfectly. So is there any way for me to overcome the fact that my looks don't match the role?

Tee hee. Quirky.
MFL, don't sweat it about your looks. If your voice is absolutely perfect, then it shouldn't matter. But the casting directors will make it work. If you're right for a part, you'll get it. If not, unfortunately, you won't.
But hey, it's their loss then.

Posted: 6/25/05 at 11:37pmThere's nothing you can do kiddo. Some casting directors (generally the good ones) will cast the best talent as long as the look doesn't conflict with the part (which is different than being the traditional image of the part) and some would rather cast for look over talent (these are the bad ones). Just do your best, and as the poster above me said, if they don't want you because of how you look, it's their loss.

Posted: 6/25/05 at 11:46pmI totally empathize, MFL, being another character type whose voice and look don't match. Go in and show them what you can do! You might be surprised at what happens. One of my favorite memories is being cast as Johanna in Sweeney Todd after being called back in for Mrs. Lovett and the Beggar Woman. I had a great conversation with Celia Keenan-Bolger about doing the part afterward (since she did it at the Kennedy Center) and she reminded me that quirky can be beautiful!
