Love Dies Die, well for a bit?

We don't believe either - the article says that the show is currently running at around 20% under the break-even figure, so it's clearly not a box office smash and could easily close in the red if they don't find some way of boosting the take, but then neither is it the soon-to-close hideous flop that others are keen to paint it.

Note that the key quote from RUG is that "Love Never Dies has been extremely well received by the audiences with a standing ovation every evening", something which is more difficult to disprove than hard financial figures (though it'll be the latter that cause its demise)...

Love Dies Die, well for a bit?

Have to say both times I saw it there were standing ovations, however it was when the two leads came out. I think its the cast that are really wowing the audiences more than the show. It really is marmite of a show, both times ive been Ive heard the same amount of positive and negative comments from people

Is there a correlation between people's taste for marmite and taste for this show (someone should do a study lol). I detest marmite and I detested LND !

Love Dies Die, well for a bit?

I thought that maybe some people might be mildly interested in this video clip. My collaborator Christopher J. Orton and I are in the process of developing a comedy musical called "Flop! The World's Worst Ever Musical" in which the hero writes the worst musical ever ("Hamlet - the musical") and then decides it will be a good idea to write a sequel. The sequel is called DEATH NEVER LOVES and is sung by the dead Hamlet and Ophelia. The song pretty much takes the p.... out of the Phantom Lord and has deliberately awful lyrics.

This video demo was filmed in the rehearsal room at the Watermill last year and has piano and vocals by Christopher Orton (singing both male and female roles!).

That is very funny!

--- And the tune is sticky in my mind in the same way Lloyd Webber's are (is that good!?).

Love Dies Die, well for a bit?

The main reason Lloyd Webber melodies stick in your head is because he tends to repeat them about fifty times during the course of a show. If you only listened to this once and it stuck, that is good! lol

Sally - glad you liked the song. If you liked this, you might enjoy taking a listen to the other songs from the same show - you should find them on the right hand side of the youtube page.

Love Dies Die, well for a bit?

Going down the escalators this week on the tube, I have noticed thy have changed the advertising poster for LND, it is much like the old one, but just behind the words Love Never Dies, the word Phantom has beem slipped in, I wonder why they would of done this?
#33

Love Dies Die, well for a bit?

Thats always been part of most of the marketing since the announcement in OCtober, they have just made it more prominant and on ALL advertising now. Personally I have always thought it looks awful and cluttered on the posters
#34

Love Dies Die, well for a bit?

I am with you Princeton in enjoying the show, but have always been consistent on here that the advertising poster is just bloody hideous.
#35

Love Dies Die, well for a bit?

No Im with you! The marketing and advertising for it has been pretty poor and uneven. The poster doesnt capture the lush and romantic aspects the show has, and that would appeal to its market. The initial holding website designs were quite nice and lush. I do like the bottom of the posters with the Coney Island skyline

Finally got to see this (12.06.10 Matinee). Having read all the reviews, have to say its nowhere near as bad as they would have you believe. Its not perfect, but it ain't that bad. Really liked the projections, the score and performances are great. The book does need work but overall an enjoyable show.

The art work is a mess.
They just couldn't/cant choose what direction in which to advertise the damn thing!
I think it would look good with a 'Must Close July 3rd' stamped across it!

... except I hear lots of people talking about Priscilla with enthusiasm and love, whereas LND seems to get "it wasn't too bad" at best!

Love Dies Die, well for a bit?

I was just on a train for a few hours and decided to sit and listen to the LND double CD to give it a second chance and see if it was as bad as I thought it was when I saw the show. OMFG - it was even worse than I remember it. LOL Without the slightest doubt, THE most dreadful score I have ever heard. There are no epithets that do justice to how awful I still consider this score to be. Admitedly it does have one great song - but that's it. The rest is either stuff he's copied and pasted from others of his works or endless repetition of that one great song or other absolutely mindnumbingly boring crap. LOL

Sorry if I've offended those who do seem to love this show but I just had to have a rant after suffering for over two hours. I know it's probably just a matter of my personal taste but there have been very few scores that I've ever found so strongly abhorrent as this one. And, don't even get me started on the lyrics........... Their awfulness almost defies belief.

Not bothered at all, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I think there have been far worse scores in recent years personally but yes it isnt Webbers best.

Priscilla for me was unoriginal and devoid of heart and 'feel good' factor. But some people love it!

I REALLY dont get the 'phans' whole 'Love Should Die' thing, that I find very sad that their lives are taken up with so much negativity. Dont like it, dont go, why waste your time on something you dont like?! Its JUST a show at the end of the day! A piece of entertainment.

As an LSD member, I might ask the same thing . . . if you don't like what we're doing, why pay attention? Love Dies Die, well for a bit?

"Phantom" has long been a great favorite of mine, and the story -- penny-dreadful-ish as it may be -- means something significant to me. I find it appalling to see ALW make an utter mess of it like this, and it helps me feel a little better to spend time talking about it with others who feel the same way. And I have every right to do so.

It's not even like that's an uncommon reaction. George Lucas fans complaining that their lives were in ruins when the "Star Wars" prequels came out, anyone? "Gone with the Wind" fans furious over "Scarlett" and "The Wind Done Gone"? "M*A*S*H" fans who refused to watch any of the spinoffs of the show? I even remember "Twilight" and "Harry Potter" fans in distress over the final entries in their respective series. LSD members aren't the first and we won't be the last.

Love Dies Die, well for a bit?

My hatred of LND does not come from the same motivation as the LSD members coz I didn't like the original Phantom either. lol
The original just wasn't quite as bad as the sequel.

I put most ALW shows in the same bracket, I'm afraid - just some are higher up the scale than others. If I made a list of what I would class as the top 20 musicals of all time, for example, there would not be a single ALW show in the top hundred. (Though I guess most people on here have already guessed I'm not a fan of the Lord's brand of musical theatre.) I did really like the recent Sunset Blvd - but that was down to Craig Revel Horwood's stunning direction and Sarah Travis's stunning orchestrations rather than the pretty bland score.

No wonder you (bob8rich) were in such pain listening to the LND score for two hours!

I like a lot of Webber's music and actually like some of that in LND--the waltz, "Devil Take the Hindmost" and a couple of others. I'm fond of Phantom of the Opera. --- haven't seen it ANYthing like 100 times, but I have seen it more than once and can understand why people are willing to take some time and money to put their opinions out in public instead of just feeling sad and mad and muttering to themselves.

The book of POTO is hardly a lesson in close writing, but it has worked very well on stage for quite some time. There is something about the story, the characters, and the music that has appealed to many people.

The story of LND sounds like a bad romance novel with some Jerry Springerish "Who's the daddy?" included. What they've done to the characters is probably only important to fans of the original show, but I should think that people who don't care anything much about the original might find the characterizations and the story lacking.

Apparently a new trap is being fitted to allow a more dramatic first entrance for the Phantom. Yawn.

Apparently London is now being talked of a no more than a try-out for Broadway.

Personally, I think they could re-write it from first to last and re-design from top to bottom. It has earned such a bad rep that however it arrives in NYC it will be ripped to shreds.
