I'm looking to do a revue that shows the similarities between classical musical theatre songs and contemporary musical theatre songs. I was just wondering if any of you could think of any or just tell me some of you favorite songs from these two time periods.

"You're the Top" from ANYTHING GOES is a fun, old song. "The Next Ten Minutes" from THE LAST FIVE YEARS is probably my favourite contemporary love song at the moment.

Call the understudy / I can't go on tonight / I'm drinking with my buddy / I'm getting good and tight / Before they raise the curtain I'll be higher than a kite / So call the understudy I can't go on tonight

Classic - I want To Be Seen With You Tonight from FUNNY GIRL

Contemporary - Suddenly Seymour from LITTLE SHOP or That Face from THE PRODUCERS

A little known fact is that in the original screenplay, Pan's Labyrinth was Pan's FLAByrinth. Hmmmmmmm...glad they changed it.

Well, my boyfriend and my song is "They Were You" from the Fantasticks. A little uncommon because it's about losing love and rediscovering it, but we like it :)

Arghh! Grammar pet peeve #1: your vs you're. "Your" is a possessive pronoun. "You're" is the contraction of "you are." <<

The thing about the contemporary time period is you're going to find a lot more love songs that aren't so traditional. 'Unworthy Of Your Love' from 'Assassins' is one of my favourite not-quite-love songs. 'Timeless To Me' from 'Hairspray' and 'You Rule My World' from 'The Full Monty' are a couple of wickedly lyric-ed ones that rock my socks. I can't think of any classic love songs that are quite so non-lovey as these; even 'I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face' is a much more traditional "I love the person I'm singing about for they make me happy" love song, albeit by a man who's so out of touch with his emotions they don't even send each other Christmas cards anymore.

Classic: "If I Loved You" from Carousel
Modern: "All the Wasted Time" from Parade

Also, I dunno if anyone agrees with me, but "Il Mondo Era Vuoto" from LitP's always reminded me a ton of "María" from WSS.

Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

People Will Say We're In Love - Oklahoma
Can't Help Lovin' That Man - Show Boat
On the Street Where You Live - My Fair Lady

I Don't Know How to Love Him - Jesus Christ Superstar
What I Did For Love - A Chorus Line
Love Changes Everything - Aspects of Love

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Caitie and my song is Someone to Fall Back On...

There are a lot of SPECIFIC songs like "Bill" or "Maria" or "Bess, You Is My Woman Now" or "Dulcinea" or "Rosabella" or "Rosemary" (you know, the ones with names). More general: "On the Street Where You Live," "I've Never Been In Love Before," "So In Love" or "Something Wonderful".

If we're talking about romantic love songs, PLEASE don't include "What I Did for Love" - every time someone uses that song as a romantic love song a (and I'm sorry to say this as a straight man - I mean no offense by it at all - just the first allusion that unfortunately popped into my head) fairy dies.
