LuPone GYPSY to close March 1

Posted: 11/17/08 at 6:53pmEven if Patti didn't have other commitments it would still close anyway, considering the grosses, IMO.

Yeah, I figured a lot of the orchestra seats were being held. There might be another discount code before it closes, most likely for the slow months after the holidays.
Gypsy won't keep going without Patti, so no it won't extend.
I actually don't think the grosses are that bad, at least compared to other shows and considering there was another revival 5 years ago. I don't think it will recoup in time, but I think it'll definitely last through these last couple of months.

Are they held for the general public or for celebs? I think the guy at the window was very thoughtful when he told me, and that to come back around closing time for orch. seats - I would have done so with a discount code anyway.
I'm not too sure about the grosses. My first ever "Gypsy" was with Bernadette Peters whom I just loved. Saw it a few times too, only b/c this is my favorite musical, after being intoduced to it in college. I can only assume this gypsy has done better, economically speaking? And I have to say, I loved the set design of 2003's Gypsy better than this. Customes too.
But I love Patti LuPone, and I saw her once before in 05's Sweeny Todd. And that's it. I was at B. Peter's closing, second row stage right, and that looked like a full house that Sunday as well. I think her speech lasted, maybe 2 minutes? I was surprised. But then again, that was my first and only closing night/show I've seen. I can't imagine they go on and on for long anyway.
Off topic...why was 2003's considered a "flop?" Yes, I remember hearing about how she got sick and never really got over her cold? I think I saw it 5 times that year and there were a handful of times that she really coughed throughout the song...was her being sick why? And did P. LuPone ever see that production? I did remember reading somewhere that she really though BP was not right for the role...anyone read anything similar?

Awww I was at that closing night as well. I sat about 3 seats over from Sondheim, which was unreal.
Gypsy is my favorite show of all time.
I believe Patti has said she did not see the 2003 production.

Oh yes, I remember the applause Sondheim received as he took his seat! That was great... I was a couple rows in front of him, on the right...how funny!
Also, I saw Bernadette's late husband at the performance as well.
Oh, so she did not see B. Peters in it...I'm almost certain I had read somewhere that Patti did not think bernadette was right for the role. Yet again, that didn't mean she saw/had seen the show at that time - could have been her mere opinion on the actress playing the role.

I don't know about her saying that, but I do know that after she won the Tony, she said something like, if you DON'T win a Tony for playing Rose, then you didn't do it right.
Mind you, I'm paraphrasing right now.
It threw a bunch of Bernadette's fans into a ranting tizzy back in June. And I'm a huge BP fan, but even I thought what Patti said was not meant to be mean to Bernadette.

Oh, I agree with you. I think that it was very unfortunate that BP didn't get off on the right foot with Gypsy. But anyway, what's done is done.
I also saw BP, was it three years ago, at Atlantic City. Loved it. To be honest, Patti LuPone is my 2nd favorite, and seeing her in Gypsy, hearing the 2008 OBR, something doesn't sound right about LuPone's voice...is it me?? I cannot really pinpoint it, it just is a bit off? I can't explain it. Or it might be just my tastes.
I liked PL voice in Lincoln Center's Sweeney Todd, than her voice in Gypsy....s. But BP voice, would it be fair to say, in a way, it sounds "sweeter," more softer, in 2003s OCR? Also, the 2008's OCR, it really doesn't move me - in a way, Patti LuPone seems to try to emulate Ethel Merman's Rose, would it be fair to say? But, Love LuPone as a talent, can't argue there.

I'm really torn. I would like a better seat than Mezz but not sure if I should hold out for the hope that orch seats will be released closer to the date. Last time I waited, I missed Pajama Game and had to wait @ 0800 in the cancellation line. In the Friggin cold! AND the woman next to me told me her life story on top of that! Decisons decision...
Anyway, are/is anyone from the board meeting up b4 or after the show?

At least, hushpuppy.
I would even say at least 15.

I think that's a case of not thinking before speaking. Ethel didn't even win a Tony.
she actually mentioned Bernadette by name in her thank you cam speech on the Tonys website, when she listed the actresses that had been given, what she called, the part of a lifetime. I thought that was sweet, especially in light of her earlier comment.

I also think the next revival of Gypsy should be radically different.....like an all black cast?
Think about it!

Or Asian! They can go to an Italian restaurant instead of a chinese one in Act 1.
Wing can totally play Rose.

Posted: 11/19/08 at 2:42pmWait, so can anyone clarify for me if there will be student rush tickets closing night?
#67re: LuPone GYPSY to close March 1
Posted: 11/19/08 at 2:43pmI don't know why there wouldn't be. I don't think they ever sell the first row seats, although I could be wrong.

Thanks guys.
Patti is friggen amazing. Honestly, she gave the greatest performance that I've ever seen, and I'd love to be at closing night, but I don't have the money to get any 100 dollar tickets.

I'm on the fence about closing night. I love this production and it'd be pretty amazing to be at closing night but...I don't know. I'm not really into the whole "OMG I HAVE TO BE AT CLOSING NIGHT!!!1111" mentality.
but I'll consider it. =D

Posted: 11/19/08 at 3:13pmUnless the entire theater sells out, I assume they'll give whatever's left for student rush. The question I'm wondering is if they're gonna go ahead and sell the front row, box seats and partial views at full price if people are willing to pay that. Maybe some of the balcony will be left for student rush... who knows. That's why I wanted to secure a seat ahead of time, I don't care where it is. I wonder how many people will be camping out. Sorry Judas, I wouldn't want to camp out with you, but I hope you do get a ticket!
