"Parker Posey. No competition."
Have you SEEN Jenn Harris? Because she's competition.
And this is coming from someone who has an unhealthy worship for Posey's work.

Yes, you are. Literally. Out of the 100+ people I've talked to about the show, you're the only person who has ever said that they hate it.

I totally respect your opinion to hate Altar Boyz. I certainly won't kill you in your sleep, or anything like that. *Hides pistol behind back*
In all seriousness, though: it's fine that you hate Altar Boyz. I definetely don't share that opinion, but everybody's got the right...

hey errico fan, I'm in your camp. I never got to post this when I wanted to, since I was working at Dodger Stages at the time, but I absolutely despised ALTAR BOYZ! I admired the performers for being able to get thru that material, but I remember coming out after the 1st preview and just fuming about how much I disliked it overall, how silly the book was, how embarrassing the musical numbers, and how the whole thing just made me depressed about the state of our pop culture. The very next day I put in a request to only be assigned to MUSICAL OF MUSICALS.
Now, this is only my opinion. It's how the show occurred to me, and it has a lot to do with the fact that I have trouble accepting the entire genre that it's based on. I dig that there's an audience for the show, and I won't be found trashing it as I sometimes will if I find a show to be horrible. ALTAR BOYZ is certainly not horrible, just incredibly mediocre. And mediocre is fine with me, so long as I don't have to watch it.

While I did love Altar Boyz, I found both Musical of Musicals and Modern Orthodox to be mediocre. How can Dodgers be doing these and not the BRILLIANT WONDERFUL AMAZING OUTSTANDING NOT ENOUGH SUPERLATIVES TO DESCRIBE IT Bare????
(just needed to vent)

Infinite: the thing to understand is that not everything at Dodger Stages is produced by Dodger. I may be mistaken, but I don't believe they are actually producing any of the current shows, except maybe DRUMSTRUCK. The facility is a public theatre space, so it is available to whoever wants to pay the rent. So, while I agree that they should have made BARE happen, it's not like they were the ones sinking money on PIECES OF ASS or GOOD VIB... oh nevermind.
It's cool if you thought those other 2 were mediocre. I like mediocre if it's in a genre that doesn't make me cringe. The main thing I loved about being assigned to MUSICAL was the audience full of theatre junkies who actually got most of the arcane references.

BroadwayMatt- Thank you so much for explaining that. Yeah, that makes a lot more sense.
I actually was obsessed with the Musical of Musicals cast recording for a long time before I actually saw it. I had a disappointing experience because I really didn't feel like seeing it added anything to the show. I guess after further thinking, I didn't find the show itself mediocre, so much as my experience seeing the show. The cast recording is brilliant. I kind of wish I hadn't heard it first, because I might've enjoyed the show more that way. I do love Lovette George. And I can totally understand how the theater aficionado audience might make working at Musical of Musicals more fun. As far as Modern Orthodox, I didn't hate it, but I felt like I was just watching a sitcom on stage, which bothered me.

that's very interesting about the MUSICAL cast album, because I loved the show having 1st seen it onstage before hearing the CD. then I got the album and actually find it rather unlistenable. I enjoyed watching the talented cast performing the material, but I didn't think the 2 male voices recorded very well. Craig Fols, for example, may not be the strongest singer they could've picked, but something about him just cracked me up everytime I saw the show.
On ORTHODOX, I agree with the sitcom thing. But it didn't bug me too much because the audience was usually having such a blast, it was just fun. There's nothing more depressing than that show with a truly dead audience. Much like a sitcom with no laugh track.
Trying to keep on topic for the thread, maaaaann did I hate ALTAR BOYZ!!

aww i'm sorry you had such a bad experience Matt! i guess it can't be that fun for you if you cringe at the thought of boy bands and their effects on pop culture. i got so much out of it mostly because it made me laugh even into the next day and that's actually not too easy to do though i know the material isn't quite suited for really serious/contemplative thoughts. i was never into boy bands back in the day (like a couple of years ago lol) but i really believe the show could put a smile on people's faces even if they went in with negative preconceptions about the premise but hey, i guess they can't reach everyone like that... personally i thought the simplistic book/lyrical message was really refreshing because i didn't have to process anything, just laugh at/with them. it may not be for everyday but sometimes it makes for a really good night! as for the real topic of this thread, whether they win or not i think the nominations really deserve their spots in their respective categories.
