Lucky Stiff

Posted: 11/18/05 at 1:47pmI'd avoided getting this recording, for some odd reason, and after listening to it yesterday, I'm kicking myself for not getting it sooner. A great early Ahrens and Flaherty score, with great work by Mary Testa, Debbie Gravitte, Judy/Judith Blazer amaong other. Favorite numbers of mine include RIta's Confession and Speaking French. I couldn't recommend it more.

i worked on the original off-b'way production. mary testa was brilliant. my favorite is the song the doctor sings in the phone booth "mary alice..." i think evan pappas was great as worthington. annie golden was the workshop girl from the universal dog home. judy is not up to the task, imo.
the production was not well directed and kind of flopped, but i think the show is GREAT.

annie didn't do the original production for several reasons, the most obvious of which was that she was doing AH WILDERNESS at lincoln center at the time, i believe. the producers wanted ivy austin in a big way -- but she was doing THE MUSIC MAN at city opera and senora sills would not let her out of the contract. they went with julie white who is an estimable actress, but no kind of singer. (this show was done during pilot season and no one was left in town) judy blazer was deemed too ordinary aka boring for the part at the time. i don't know why annie isn't on the recording.
