Oh, hushpuppy, get off your condescending high horse. The definition of 'gout' has nothing to do with my point whatsoever. The song is essentially a list song. By breaking the pattern and speaking a line, "I can afford to see a Broadway show!", the character is already editorializing, which means, if anything, the following line should illustrate his editorial by naming a show, preferably something low-rent, as befitting the character, something like "CATS!". To follow it with a non-sequitur like "gout" is a poor punchline to the joke. No wonder that audiences are confused. Any joke that needs explanation doesn't work. Period.

If the song is a listing song, he should go on listing things he wants, then. If he sings "a house in the Bahamas", he's not gonna say where in the Bahamas he wants a house, he's gonna keep listing ("paisley silk pajamas", which has nothing to do with the Bahamas, as far as I know).
In phantom original recording.......i think of me.....I always thoght raul said "She's really not a bitch" but is really "she's really not a bit, the corkish girl..."
I was like......that is mean to say that!
^^actually wickedfreak the lyrics are
"She's really not a bit, the gawkish girl..."
I just find it funny that there are so many problems understanding the cast of WICKED - I have had all the problems that you have as well. Says something about the diction dosent it?

Read my post again, Mythus. Yes, it's a list song but as I wrote above, IT BREAKS PATTERN. Which is why the moment calls for editorializing and elaboration, not more of the same (list).

It does not at all, Hunter. There is no pattern. He shouts "A mink tracksuit!" "My own personal Zamboni!" "Lots of unnecessary surgery!" "I can finally afford to see a Broadway show!" (A joke in itself) "Gout!"
He's listing them. They are jokes in themselves. The Broadway show line is a joke about how expensive tickets are nowadays, and that he can finally afford to buy one. He then goes on to say that he'll also get gout. What's the problem?

I have another Little Women one:
my way: "I may be strong but I've got giant plans"
real way: "I may be small but I've got giant plans"
...huge difference right there.
except the several La Vie Boheme variations I sing...my sister and I always say: "excuse me if I'm on crack" instead of "excuse me if im off track" during Another Day :)
