I think the lyrics to Wicked are attacked much more than they deserve, but there is one I've always thought would be easily changed.

"And though you protest
Your disinterest . . ."

to

"And though you've professed (or confessed)
Your disinterest . . ."

It's bothered me, because Elphaba isn't protesting her disinterest. She's not saying, "No, no, I swear I'm not disinterested in this!" She's telling Glinda that she's not interested. She's professing, or confessing, her disinterest. It's a grammatical issue, but I want it changed because it's such a small change and so easy to make it make more sense.

I also don't love the line
"And though you protest
Your disinterest . . ."
Whenever I hear disinterest I think of the main definition, which is lack of bias, which I don't really think is going on with Elphaba. I know it can also mean lack of interest, but since protest isn't the best word choice, I would have liked it better had he written a different line to express the same idea.

Yero, the first thing I thought of when I saw this subject was that Castle in the Cloud lyric you referenced. It always drives me nuts. When I sing it to my baby, I always make it rhyme. re: Lyrics/Rhymes You Always Wanted To Change

this isn't exactly a lyric change, but does anyone think it's weird that the wizard in Wicked has no trouble pronouncing Philanthropist when he can't do it in the wizard of oz hahaha?

that is funny singingshowgirl. But I think they mainly based WICKED the musical on the The Wizard of OZ novel more than the movie. But, still.
