Posted: 5/21/11 at 6:39pmI saw it this afternoon. I thought it was very good. There were some sound issues, but nothing major. The cast was great and the music is catchy and the choreography is so much fun to watch. I really enjoyed it!

Was a bit underwhelming. Jokes seemed dated. Nothing you didn't see in a late 90s teen comedy or high school musical.
Patti Murin KILLS IT as Lysistrata. Her comic timing is amazing and her act 1 finale brings down the house. However, Lindsay Nicole Chambers steals the show as the sassy library assistant Robin.
Much of the dancing is quite impressive, but some of the youngsters strike me as miscast...
Check it out! Would love to hear more opinions. Show needs to cut about 45 minutes. Thoughts?

Posted: 5/22/11 at 11:34pmWas there tonight and 100% agree, addicted. It was super adorable and so campy. Douglas Carter Beane is a comic genius. The score is decent, but not outstanding (though it serves the show very well). Also Lindsay Nicole Chambers deserves to be famous. She's so funny.

I saw it's closing night in Dallas last year and absolutely loved it.
Anyone have an extra playbill/doesn't want their's? I'd love one from the off-Broadway run.

transport group does a virtual playbill on their website. transportgroup.org
at the actual show, they hand out a smaller program with basic information, but all the good stuff - actor bios, etc, is on their website.

#15Lysistrata Jones (Give it Up!)--GREAT!
Posted: 5/23/11 at 5:45pmSaw it last night and it was FABulous! More fun than anything I've seen in a long while, and the talent can't be beat. The cast seems to be mostly new compared with the Dallas (Give It Up) production, which I didn't get to see, but the always magnificent Liz Mikel reprises her central role, and is just fantastic. The band is also excellent. Such a small venue, so no bad seats, and they have a generous student rush price, which made it possible for me. No sound issues or any problems at all, and the audience was pumped! Great stuff. Go if you have the chance.

The band plays up a storm, the talented cast rollicks and rolls, the dancing is energetic and inventive, and yet, for all that, the show falls short of the mark. After a promising opening number, it wears out its welcome quickly once the plot gets into gear.
And what a plot, the brainchild of the inimitable Douglas Carter Beane. In this take on Lysistrata, Beane has a ditzy cheerleader decide to withhold her favors from her boyfriend until his school basketball team wins a game. Somehow she gets her girlfriends to go along with this harebrained caprice. Imagine, here we are in 2011, and we have a woman whose sense of fulfillment is predicated on her boyfriend's athletic achievement. It's beyond ridiculous.
Then there are the guys, equally ill served by Beane, who seems to know little about a college athlete's psyche. An athlete doesn't join a team if he is not going to play all out every game, or if he does not want to win every game.
As for the show's " humor," such as it is, (about a dozen laughs), it's of the arch, self-knowing, forced variety that has come to typify Beane's latest works, and which ran rampant in last years lollapaloser, Mr. & Mrs. Fitch.
Beane doesn't care a bit about consistency of character. One minute, the jock seems so dense he couldn't tie his own shoelaces, the next, he's reciting verses of Walt Whitman by heart.
The music is loud and assertive, but aside from the first song, is unmemorable.

How "sexual" is the show? I will be in town with my 13 year old daughter... and I am wondering if its a good show to take her too.

I would say as dirty as Rock of Ages. Sexually suggestive, but no more.
I really enjoyed the show a lot. There are areas to improve particularly with the lyrics and parts of the book, but overall I really had a ball. I couldn't wipe the smile away from my face for the fist 1/2 hour or so which is more than I can say for any musical I've seen on Broadway this year.
On a side note, Penny Marshall was sitting a couple rows ahead of me and a friend the other night. We were waiting around after for a friend who was in the show when Penny came back through the hall for a photo op with the cast and congratulated us on a wonderful show. Yes, Penny Marshall told me how great I was, and she didn't even see me do a damn thing.
