"MAC Meets" by David Finkle in BACK STAGE#0

Here are the last 2 lines of David Finkle's take on the MAC mtg. Today’s BACK STAGE issue is now at the newsstands:

"Though it appeared by the time the semiannual meeting ended that those guiding MAC are satisfied with their progress, it strikes one objective viewer that MAC is doing little -- and can really do little -- to alleviate the woes afflicting cabaret. A stronger association is needed, but will likely never materialize while MAC smugly stumbles on."

hi milla. i'm a semi-interested party but i haven't been able to follow the months of wrangling regarding MAC. i want to know what are the issues at hand, besides the nomination process for MAC awards. what woes afflicting the world of cabaret can be solved by a more effective trade organization?

thanks for pushing this issue to the forefront. MAC has been a joke to me for a good long while, but i don't understand what it is SUPPOSED to do.

GG, thanks for your post. Here's a generalized definition of a trade association. It was contained in my 7/4/05 email sent it to the MAC BOD:

"An industry trade group is generally a public relations organization funded, founded and formed by corporations that operate in a specific industry. Its purpose is generally to promote that industry through PR activities such as advertising to improve the industry image, education to increase awareness… ‘Got Milk’ is a perfect example of this. The National Milk Mustache "got milk?"® Campaign is jointly funded by America's milk processors and dairy farmers: The Milk Processor Education Program.

PR deals with influencing public opinion, through the presentation of a client's image, message, or product. PR can effect widespread opinion and behavior change.

Whereas marketing rsrch & marketing aims to identify markets that will purchase a product (business) or support an idea and then facilitate that purchase, advertising is the paid communication by which information about the product or idea is transmitted to potential consumers."

And that's just for starters.

"Cabaret as we know it is dead..has been for years!

It is the smart artist who takes his show, and finds ways to move it out of the designated cabaret "spots".....and finds a new audience away from this crowd...There are a handful of such people and to those I shout, 'Bravo'!!"

voiceanth, Thanks. I couldn't agree w/you more. Cabaret needs to think out of the box.

GG, what I posted in quotes is a generalized approach to what I believe a cabaret trade ass'n needs to do.

Here's what appears on MAC's website:

"MAC MISSION STATEMENT

MAC's mission is to advance the art and business of live entertainment. A trade association, its activities are designed to heighten public awareness of the field's contributions and vitality, to honor its creativity, to build its current and future audiences, and to speak out as an influential voice on behalf of MAC mbrs and the industry at large."

As I read this, I'm reminded of MAC's ineffectiveness. The org did NOTHING serious to org its mbrshp to contact the NYT nor did it seriously lobby the NYT to restore the cabaret listings to the Sun. NYT. As a matter of fact on 10/8 it will be 1 yr that I read the announcement that the OB & cabaret listings would be ditched in the Sun NYT. I posted every where about this to rally the cabaret forces. All that happened in the cabaret trenchs was a MAC "mbr" offered to call the NYT editor in charge of this to set up a mtg. I offered to go with her. So did MAC VP Scott Barbarino. In following up, I asked several times if & when this was going to happen. The MAC "mbr" in essence told me to "get a life" & to my knowledge MAC & it's VP did nothing further.

cabaret needs some ambassadors into the community and to perform some good works and build up some goodwill with the public. cabaret is really invisable these days.
i've been to international cabaret festivals and you just wouldn't believe the diversity of talent, the incredible venues and the popularity of the art form overseas.

the MAC board needs to be made up of some folks w/ some marketing chops. i nominate that shameless hussy, jim caruso.
