If they follow protocol he can't be back by then. So either they aren't going to follow protocol, or they're going to perform without him (or cancel more performances later). They're backed into a corner if they want to be Tony eligible this season, they can't push opening night. So maybe they'll care more about getting a few more previews in to hone things even if it means playing to a low capacity crowd.
Unless, as someone else mentioned, his symptoms started days ago and he's been performing despite having Covid symptoms. That's not a great look, either.
And it might all be moot if more people in the cast test positive and it has to extend its shut down.
