The Buyer Got Smarter Than the Box Office

I think it's a combination of informed buying habits, but also a level of caring. If the buyer doesn't care about the property there's no incentive to buy early –– or at all.

It takes more to get people to care nowadays, and for musicals and non-star/non-IP plays it has always been a tough proposition to say "here's 2 demo songs and a synopsis! Nobody super famous is in it. Want to risk $75+++ on something you might not like?"

2026 Post-Tony Closures and Successors

The Tony wins they are likely to get will give them a boost (Costumes and Choreo are on lock, and strong odds for Direction - Revival and Featured Actor are the wobbliest prospects)."

They will get no meaningful boost from any win except Best Revival, and even that rarely results in a huge sales uptick. Unlike Best Musical which does still h

Bleak, but not unexpected!

Lets fast-forward to next season and cross our fingers…

I find that Sabrina Carpenter rumor to be deeply suspicious.

I find it so depressing.

Yes it's cheap compared to a larger musical (probably not cheap compared to a play), but I also remember it as a good show that I would be totally fine seeing again. Especially if this version can sell better than the original because of interesting casting.

Or to put it another way:  I'd prefer this over an

Reimagined THE FANTASTICKS will open on Broadway this fall

tomorrowBIGLITES said: "I have nothing against this lovely show.
But it seems very clear Broadway doesn’t have money.

This will probably be the most expensive show 2nd Stage has ever produced on Broadway (by nature of it being a musical and not a play). It's not like this is some easy cash grab.

Reimagined THE FANTASTICKS will open on Broadway this fall

I've just realized that this marks something of a mission-change for 2nd Stage under the new leadership:

Up to this point, the company has been "exclusively devoted to living American writers." Tom Jones & Harvey Schmidt have been dead 3 and 8 years.

HenryTDobson said: "Sorry if this a dumb question..... could the score be eligible for best new score next year since it hasn't been on Broadway yet?"

If this were the 1990s or earlier, yes, but not anymore because of the “classics” rule. It will be considered a revival, as it should be.

I believe Jones & Schmidt would have been eligible in the Revival category if they were alive, but since both are deceased the aw

I’m not concerned about Fantasticks selling in a house of that size, and I am excited to see a reimagined version with an orchestra. It could be gorgeous.

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 5/31/26

Call_me_jorge said: "Were any of the new musicals profitable this week?"

Did we ever find out a weekly actual for LOST BOYS? I have to think it's under $1.2 mil a week, in which case they broke even the past two weeks.

Assuming SCHMIGADOON costs about $950K per week? If so, it and TITANIQUE have yet to break even in any week.

I don't think a Broadway show has grossed that little in my lifetime.

Between this and BEACHES, these desperate, third-tier producers need to think twice when Shubert offers them an inappropriate house. Regardless of how cheap CelebAut is to mount, it's not THIS cheap.

For some reason 550 sticks out in my mind.

Two questions regarding Cynthia Erivo

We see this with Audra all the time and we used to see it with Nathan Lane when he did musicals: if the star is singing, they’ll sell.

Dracula basically had toxic word of mouth from moment one, and didn’t they hold more seats back than they should have for future sale and it kind of backfired?

Two questions regarding Cynthia Erivo

inception said: “Who would be dumb enough to put money in a commercial revival of Passion is my big question? Maybe at a non-profit?"

Greg Nobile/Seaview, per the Oracle.

She’d be great in the part.

I don’t think it’s a dumb investment at all. I think the show has a better chance of finding an audience NOW than in the 90s and young people may be drawn to the story once they see it. The reality is, any Bway musical starring Cynthi

Any buzz on Romeo and Juliet?

TNick926 said: "I was deeply impressed and movedby the Broadway production of ROMEO AND JULIET last year with Rachel Ziegler and Kit O’Connor. I wonder if the success of that production has caused the somewhat lackluster reception and interest in this NYSF production?"

I know nonprofit theatres sometimes plan years in advance, but it's kind of baffling to me that they would do this 15 months after the previous Broadway revival (which was a sellout hit).

RAGTIME 2025 Reviews

Ben Davis just posted on social media that he will be replacing Colin Donnell as Father, which is much better casting.

Will be a short run if the show is indeed not extending and closing in July.

Les Miserables 40th Anniversary Cast Recording

I've grown to appreciate the newer orchestrations, but the 10th Anniversary concert recording will still always be my MIZ of choice.

IMITATION OF LIFE at The Shed (John Legend & Lynn Nottage)

Melissa25 said: "Are Adrienne Warren and Dee Roscioli still attached to this? Any new casting?"

Certainly helps that AW and WW have worked together before, but White may want to start at square one with the casting to put her own stamp on the piece.

I'd like to see it, but not for $79 + fees :)

IMITATION OF LIFE at The Shed (John Legend & Lynn Nottage)

Whitney White feels like a directorial upgrade over Liesl Tommy. I know Whitney's musical output has been mixed at best, but given her work as a director, composer, writer, and performer, it seems like only a matter of time before she has a big hit. A big talent.

Announced replacements that never happened

Lou Gossett lasted four days in CHICAGO, Jeffrey Tambor did about two weeks in LA CAGE. Barry & Fran Weissler were behind both shows.

Here’s Tambor’s Song on the Sand. The staccato “La da da da” is certainly a choice and I wouldn’t want to hear him in concert, but his voice isn’t awful and he probably would have been good with a role like Cladwell in Urinetown instead of a romantic lead.
