On paper, they are perfect for these roles, so I would place the blame on Mayer (whose production was never as funny as I’d like for Little Shop imho) and Austin Regan, the show’s resident director who rehearses all the replacements. Quality control on a long-running show can live and die with its resident director.

As far as I know, Jeffrey Richards is still trying to get a revival of this off the ground, with Michael Mayer directing. Joe Mantello is one of the great directors of his generation, full stop.Pam Mackinnon did superb work on this play in its prior incarnations, and while I'm sad she's not doing the Broadway run, I have no doubt that Mantello will do something great with this.Who knows, she might even be making some money off the Broadway production, since she was involved in developing the play and two actors are continuing on.

Staying open through Christmas is often a good bet and can wash away some losses from the fall.I was going to say they could benefit from a slim fall season, but then I looked and as of mid-December there will be 23 musicals running on Broadway (plus two musical-sized plays based on IP) - which feels robust. That number could be much lower by MLK weekend.

A bunch of those playhouses have minimums of 4, and the conductor counts as one. So it would only be 2-3 more than what they had in La Jolla. $8-10K more per week is not going to make or break the show. Sue Frost seems smart enough that she would not put the show into an inappropriately big house like the Imperial.
