Reception seemed mixed at best, which I guess is better than the unmitigated disaster that was on stage at City Center a few years ago.It would need a major star (or two or three) to raise the money and sustain sales long enough to recoup. The last commercially-produced Broadway revival to recoup in New York without a star was PIPPIN, which opened more than 13 years ago. Or Jeffrey Richards would need to give it up to a nonprofit.

I’ve seen it once from the center section (the bottom of the “U” shape of the theatre) and once from the side.The center on an aisle is probably the most “traditional” view, maybe rows C-F. If you’re on the side you get a great view of the band and the two stages that the cast performs on, and the actors might be a little closer to you.There’s really not a bad seat.

I don't really understand SIX's strategy of paying travel money and visa money and housing costs to bring over two of the ladies from the original London production when their numbers are this low. It's not like it's going to make any difference at the box office or increase media interest in any meaningful way when they're circling the drain.

For what it’s worth, they spent a *very* long time trying to lock in a big Broadway director (all the usual suspects for a show like this, plus some of the less-expected ones).I think the success of Moulin Rouge paired with the chaoticness of the rightsholders killed any possible interest from even the most desperate of reputable directors.

According to About The Artists (which isn’t always up to date), DOWNSTATE has had just two regional engagements since the PH production in 2022, and both were in the first half of 2025. Even if it’s been done at four regionals, I really don’t think that should qualify it as a revival.The play would have been Pulitzer-eligible in 2018.
