re: MB reviews TWO GENTS with Rosario in the Park

Emcee, the only other thing I can say to you is to relax. People are not NEARLY as negative about this film as you think they are...

And I was critical of the casting BACK IN SEPTEMBER (a year ago, sweetie) but eventually came around. So what? Who crowned you queen and said no one else could speak ill about decisions being made on a film?

"it's not entirely without logic"

All I'm saying is that you can be very rude and elitist, although you are quick to accuse others of the same. I think the negative impact of Rent on your life is inherent in the tone you use when defending it against criticism. Lots of sighs and long posts intended to put other people to shame.

Also, at no point did I say I wasn't looking forward to the film. It's still #1 on my most anticipated list - as evidenced by all the posting I've been doing about it. I don't know where you got the idea that I wouldn't like a "shred" of it, especially after I've been talking up the performers for Oscar nominations. You really just need to clear your mind and read my posts carefully before you strike.

re: MB reviews TWO GENTS with Rosario in the Park

I'm not saying that people can't criticize it; and if you're referring to the thread about Rosario's singing, just look at some of the stuff being said. If it made any sense, that'd be a different story. Criticism based on nothing is far from valuable. Can't we at least have a sensical discussion?

I wasn't talking about *your* critical comments. If I must spell it out, I mean that I have come around. Not entirely, and still with slight apprenhension on a few thing, but that's to be expected. It just seem so impossible for people to see a simple desire to *want* to believe in this. Hating everything about it just got exhausting. I anticipate by trying to put a postiive spin; you anticipate with apprehension. There's the difference between us.

And honestly? I wouldn't have been so quick to refute what you said if you hadn't found the need to single me out, and turn into something about ME, rather than about pictures on a screen. I think that's rude.

re: MB reviews TWO GENTS with Rosario in the Park

I believe in the film but that doesn't mean that I'm not at least willing to consider a problem when it's suggested.

"I'm not saying that people can't criticize it"

Right, you are saying that people can't criticize it without being accused by you of speaking nothing but ill will against the film.

"If I must spell it out, I mean that I have come around."

This wasn't worded in a respectful way. Maybe I do claim to know a lot about film; I have a degree in it, for chrissakes. But I'm not going out of my way to make sure that other people feel completely inferior to me (ahem).

So you anticipate by trying to put a positive spin on things and I anticipate with apprehension. Your point? I'm allowed to be nervous. And honestly, I think beneath your "positive spins," dread is tangible. "Would they really cast her if she couldn't sing... would they..."

re: MB reviews TWO GENTS with Rosario in the Park

I understand that there might be problems with it. It's naive to think that the movie is going to be without flaw. All I mean by any of this is that I think it's getting ridiculous to go on so little, and seem so thoroughly convinced that Rosario is going to pale. And I'm not just talking about you, even though I feel like you think I am. I realize that you look forward to it, and like I said, in a way different to that in which I do - I refer more to the people who *truly* have been very, very little but negative, even this late in the game. I'm trying NOT to be nervous, but of course I still am. It's easier that way. I also realize that you have a degree in film - and that's why our outlooks are different. I know very, very little about film, and I've freely admitted that throughout discussions of the movie, yes, since last September.

Obviously the first time I said what I "spelled out," by fault of either my wording or your reading - it doesn't matter which - what I meant was unclear.

And surely you won't believe me (ahem), but I don't intentionally mean or go looking for ways to put people into some sort of inferiority complex. There's now crime in passionate defense of something you believe in? Like I said, I would've made my point in a less "rude" way if you hadn't pointed the finger so easily. Don't you even see how that's insulting? Maybe not, if you only keep accusing me of being that way.

Is this argument really worthwhile? Let's look at the facts:

1. We're both still anticipating this film.
2. We're both nervous about some aspects of it.
3. We're both excited about others.
4. We've both probably been following its production a little too closely.

I think you and I are too similar for comfort in some other ways. Bottom Line: I do like you, and I had hoped that you would respond to my comment about seeing the expression on your face with good humor rather than taking offense, but it's okay that you didn't. Hand shake?

As I said on another thread, I personally think Rosario as Mimi on film will be just fine. Great maybe. She just doesn't have the vocal chops to sing Mimi live. But she's not going to, so what does it matter?

re: MB reviews TWO GENTS with Rosario in the Park

It stopped being worthwhile about fifteen minutes ago, because we both feel far too strongly about this for it to even be remotely constructive anymore.

The perils of the internet strike again, I suppose. I honestly didn't think you meant it as a joke, given surroundings. I'll admit that the nearly-total 180 turn has put me on the defensive more often - and yes, that the strong feelings I had *against* the film have now turned the opposite way. It had seemed for so long like everyone was all "yay, Rent's gonna be a movie!!" and I suppose it should've been anticipated that as it got closer, there was going to be more negativity, even from random people just trying to get the fans riled up. It's all emotional reaction, not intended malice, and maybe even though you show that type of reaction less, I think you see it - or at least where I come from.

And yes, even online, too much similarity lights a fire.

I'm sorry. *shakes*

re: MB reviews TWO GENTS with Rosario in the Park

My friend, who attended TWO GENTS, had this to say after learning that Rosario's OUT TONIGHT impressed popcultureboy:

Interesting about Rosario's "OUT TONIGHT." They must have really enhanced her voice, because Ramon, she really can't sing. I bet she'll pull it off though (the movie). Singing into a microphone in a studio is a totally different deal then in a 1,000 seat theatre in Central Park. I admire her for giving stage a try, and I think with experience she could absolutely become a charming stage actor.

re: MB reviews TWO GENTS with Rosario in the Park

I plan on seeing Two Gents (hopefully) but I have to wonder what the music is like. I mean, Out Tonight... it seems like the kind of song that could sound fantastic, even on someone with little training; people can belt like crazy with little training and poor technique, but still sound quite impressive, sometimes (like Eden Espinosa - I don't think she has much formal training at all). So I'm wondering, maybe Two Gents is just more... legit, less pop/rock, and overall not her thing?

re: MB reviews TWO GENTS with Rosario in the Park

I'm sure Gerard Butler benefitted from similar enhancement in Phantom. But here's the question: If she really can't sing, why would she bother doing this show?

re: MB reviews TWO GENTS with Rosario in the Park

Should we be saying she really can't sing on the basis of her first two shots at it in public ever? Let's give her a chance to get over whatever nerves/ stage fright issues that might arise, and see how she does after a couple of weeks. By the way, though Michael's opinion carries a lot of weight, others have posted on ATC that her voice was "small but pleasant" and that while weaker than others in the cast, she sang well enough to fit into the show.

The general consensus over there is that it's a wonderful production, by the way.

Wow! I feel legendary. My name has been mentioned numerous times in this thread and I'm not even a part of it. Thanks you gouys for thinking of me! Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. re: MB reviews TWO GENTS with Rosario in the Park

MB i loved Megan Lawrence's performance too! i saw the Two Gents last night and i thought she stole the show. she was the only one to get cheers on top of applause. re: MB reviews TWO GENTS with Rosario in the Park the Betrayal song rocked! and i agree that Night Letter wasn't all that it could be...i wonder what they will eventually do with the show before it "opens."
