No, it's not. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang the musical is based on the film of the same name, which was also a musical. The music is by the Sherman Brothers, the same people who wrote the music for the Mary Poppins film and various other Disney films. But Chitty was not a Disney film -- it was produced by the same people who produced the James Bond films (the author of the book on which the film is based is Ian Fleming), and it is these same people who are producing the show.

Meat Loaf as the CHILD CATCHER?!? Sorry, I have a hard time picturing this. The film Child Catcher, Robert Helpmann, was very thin. The original stage Child Catcher in London, Richard O'Brien, is also very thin. As I recall, Meat Loaf is somewhat heavier than that. Also, the character dances around a bit on stage -- how good are his dancing feet?

Queen Muppet, in the film the Child Catcher does not sing, but in the stage production he does. It's a new song written for the stage show, titled "Kiddy Widdie Winkies" and, despite the corny title, isn't a bad song. It describes how the Child Catcher tricks the children into his hands. In London, it was the role of the Childcatcher which drew stunt casting - it was recast almost every 3 months and started by Richard O'Brien of THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, followed by female impersonator Paul O'Grady, by famed stage dancer Wayne Sleep...and a few others. I am not sure if the role is still currently played by pop singer Stephen Gately ( from BoyZone) but he also performed the role.

Maybe they have the same intention when the Broadway CHITTY opens.

Only if they were trying to recreate the film entirely. But they're not. Sometimes, the creative vision of a show extends beyond one idea. The role is not too different from Thenardier, which has been cast in many different sizes. Just open your minds a little, guys. Meat Loaf is a good actor and singer. The Childcatcher does not require a leit voice. The role and the song are about acting, not singing.

You're right, Mr. Matt. I've been talking with other people about this subject, and I've learned quite a bit about Meat Loaf that I hadn't known before. Looking at his IMDB page has been informative as well. Their comments have caused me to have second thoughts.

Steinman also wrote songs for the Australian group Air Supply. Remember "Making Love Out Of Nothing at All"? It came out at the same time as "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and was virtually the same song!
