"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

That's great news, except I wish I liked this film more. I think it's pretty bad to be honest, and a pale companion to the stage show.

Dreadfully miscast, uneven performances throughout, the focus is thrown off on the main characters...

...still, there are a few good moments in it.

But not many.

I've always had a problem with this movie too. In fact I don't think I've ever seen it completely from start to finish. I usually watch it while channel surfing yet from what I've seen I've never had the desire to tivo it much less purchase it. I also was sorry Betty Grable opted out as Adelade at the last minute. Granted it was Vivian Blaine's role yet I still would have preferred a different actresses take on the role(unfortunately I saw Blaine recreate her signature role in a stock production when she was way way past her prime). The sets seem surreal to me too in an unattractive way. As far as Brando as Sky, I would have given the role to Sinatra instead. Something's just off to me in this movie. It just seems to ramble on...much like my post...lol.

Not to mention the fact that they cut both Hot Box songs from the stage musical and replaced them with two far inferior songs. This is one movie musical I would not mind seeing redone. I've always disliked it. It's one of my favorite shows and it deserves a movie that does a better job of living up to its greatness.

SOG25---I would love to see it redone as a film as well. We sure don't have a "definitive version" of it. And it's such a classic show!

I've heard talk of a remake with John C. Reilly as Nicely Nicely (good choice IMO) and *gasp* Vin Diesel as Sky. I think the latter was a joke though.

No one is alone.

I believe Disney bought the rights to Guys & Dolls so depending on how Hairspray and Dreamgirls do, expect to see a re-make of Guys & Dolls perhaps as a TV movie. Hopefully it'll be more like Annie and less like Once Upon A Mattress. I agree that a show that has been described as the best book musical, deserves a movie far better from the MGM film.
