MGM's Sands on T4 and The Hobbit
Source: The Hollywood Reporter October 25, 2006
MGM chief operating officer Rick Sands talked about the studio's upcoming projects during a ceremony for Sylvester Stallone at the Orlando World Marriott Center on Tuesday. Stallone picked up the ShowEast Icon Award for playing Rocky Balboa.
The Hollywood Reporter says Sands is packaging the fourth "Terminator" film -- it will be titled "Terminator blah blah, not Four," Sands joked -- with a new star likely to fill the Arnold Schwarzenegger role. "It's like the 'Batman' or 'Superman' franchise in that it lends itself to having different actors in the roles," he said.
Sands is in talks with New Line Cinema to get the rights to produce two prequel films to "The Lord of the Rings" series, based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit," he said.
Other projects he mentioned include a sequel to The Thomas Crown Affair, set to star Pierce Brosnan, and a remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
Now, I know it mentions a little bit about and doesn't say if it's going to be a remake of the film or a film of the musical, but it just makes you wonder if the musical will be preserved on film. If it is the musical, I hope they get Norbert to star in it.
It would be pointless remaking it this soon, if it's NOT the musical. What's next, a remake of Superman Returns or maybe Spider-man 2?
It's a musical remake they are contemplating - but I don't think it will happen. It wouldn't work.

Why don't you think it would work? Just curious.
I don't think a lot of the humor of the musical would work on screen. I think it would suffer from a lot of the same problems the film of THE PRODUCERS did. Perhaps with a wonderful director it might be great- but it doesn't seem like a natural fit for screen to me.
I don't think it would work as a movie either, but I miss this show way to much.
If they do not do the musical, please do not remake it as the movie is a clasic
a SEQUEL to The Thomas Crown Affair?
heyzeus
A remake of Thomas Crown would be a remake of a remake. Where does it end ?

my sister's class is seeing the national tour next week
but yeah, i would love a movie of this, IF it was done well
The stage humor could be easily cut. It would make a good film.
there is seriously no point of remaking DRS
all those movie ideas sound like clunkers to me. is MGM just giving out money cause i wanna know where to stand in line!
I don't know how this would fare as a remake. If I'm not mistaken, wasn't DRS made in the 80's? If so, it seems too soon to be remaking it. As for it being a musical, it might transfer well to the screen in the hands of a capable director. I don't think Nobert would star in it because they would most likely want big names in the lead roles, and as much as I love Norbert Leo Butz, I don't think he's a big enough name outside of Broadway to draw people in.
I actually kind of plotted out (yes, I wrote a script) up to Great Big Stuff on how it could work on film, in corportaing some of the things in the movie, and it very well could work.
I'd love to see Steve Martin as Lawrence, lol.
John Lithgow alone will be enough star power but if they replace Norbert, I'll keep/check my money, thank you.

Since WHEN has John Lithgow been open to open an 60 million dollar movie?

I believe they mean to do a sequel to the Thomas Crown Affair. Though while you're at it, a new DRS would be a remake of a remake...
they said a SEQUAL to The Thomas Crown Affair. not a remake.
but either idea sounds just horribly wrong

If a movie version of the musical is indeed made, I hope that they cast Norbert. Only one big name would really be needed, in my opinion, and if they cast a big name actor as Lawrence, it leaves the possibilty for Norbert- he should be in the movie. It really is his role...
Hmm...I see where both sides are coming from in terms of whether it would be a good fit or not.
There are a lot of aspects of the show that are quite theatrical, and appeal to a kind of audience-interaction, not to mention all the breaking-the-fourth-wall moments.
Like the Bush line works as the whole audience screams and claps as it's said. It wouldn't work the same without that in the movie.
There's a lot of parts of the show like this. It's not so simple to "cut out" these things. If you just did that, the movie would be sorely lacking. You would have to replace the stage aspects with movie aspects. And that can be very difficult to do well, and would take a lot of work.
But there are certainly aspects of it that can fit well into a movie, enough so that if spaces aren't left by the absence of the stage humor, it could become an excellent movie.
But a good director and cast is absolutely essential. the movie's doomed with one weak actor.

Wasn't everyone clamoring for Jack Black in the stage production?
Why so silent on this topic regarding the movie, then?
Norbert will get it if his role in that Steve Carrell movie (Dan in Real Life) is a standout. My hopes are not high.
