Caught MOVIN OUT last night. Saw the show in previews and loved it. Last night, I was blown away by what I saw on the stage of the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
Is there a more creative and inventive show on Broadway right now? When was the last time I actually gasped out loud in a musical number? Where can you find better acted, more fully realized performances -- not just musical theatre acting -- but characterizations - rich, honest, embittered?
The show is in superb shape...
Twyla Tharp and her dancers have done the seemingly impossible. They have made a show now entering the dangerous three year doldrums sharper and more vibrantly alive then it was when it first opened.
Much of that credit is due to the cast who continue to find layers and new depth in both their technique and their characters.
Keith Roberts and John Seyla continue to amaze with vulnerability and power respectively. Mabel Modrono is heart wrenching as Judy. And Karine Plantadit as Brenda is simply one of the best, most exciting dancers we have ever seen on Broadway. Cat like with lithe, muscular limbs and wild hair, Plantadit possesses a flexible prowess that may even eclipse that of the brilliant Elizabeth Parkinson.
Her performance is in turns coy, pulverized, ferocious and finally exhilarated. As an audience member it was hard to feel more then a single emotion -- awe.
Special mention to Rika Okomoto and John Cavanaugh who continues to power the best band on Broadway.
Its extraordinary to find a show that three years into its run contains so many original cast members. The fact that they are more visceral and razor sharp then ever is an incredible testament. Every other long running Broadway show should look to MOVIN OUT and take note.
And please, before the show closes in January, won't somebody please record this for commercial distribution? There is no other choreography on Broadway right now that so deserves preservation.

I love Movin' Out. it truely is an amazing show.
I saw it on Tuesday night, the same cast you saw, and thought it was great.
Yes I defiantely want a dvd of the show, and it is kinda groundbreaking and artsy. I want more shows like this, that show a sotry through dance, the emotion is crazy.
Mabel as Judy was my favorite character, so moving watching her when they fold the flag. Great show, I don't want it to close at all.
I agree with every word Michael Bennett. EVERY word.
Such an innovative and thrilling piece of work and it will be missed on Broadway. PLEASE catch it if you haven't already...it is jaw-dropping.
A tad off-topic...but has anything been rumored for the Richard Rogers after MOVIN' OUT vacates? I heard something about TARZAN...is that true?
If this show were on DVD, I'd be SO happy. One of the few shows that would able to preserve it on DVD with the original cast, who are all phenomenal.
