Bob Fosse wanted her to play Velma had he made the film.
Yes, she was good in BLOODHOUNDS...
And, she has become an even better singer since EVITA (which was ten years of voice lessons ago).

um Madonna can belt. Though, yes, she didn't in EVITA---which I wanted to hear her do.
As in the off-topic threads, I ask: WHY such hatred of her? I mean, some of you are just downright nasty about her. She put you off THAT MUCH? Really?

Posted: 8/26/05 at 1:30pmI love Madonna in the movie, now the movie it self was quiet bad. But i think she brought flare to the role. Personally i dislike LuPone's portrayl. I think Madonna made her softer and gave you reasons why she seduced a nation!

Posted: 8/26/05 at 1:33pmWell, MEF---I agree there. If she can't do the show live, I bet and hope she says no. I don't think she would dare put herself up to the scrutiny that many Broadway star replacements have--people who should have never taken a role that they did--unless she knew she could do it.

Posted: 8/26/05 at 1:35pmI do like Madonaa. Just not as "EVITA". "EVITA" was one of my favorite musicals. I couldn't wait for a movie to be made. When it finally was and I saw it I was let down by her performance and believe me I gave her the benefit of the doubt and was rooting for her to do a great job. I personally felt she lacked the one thing that would have made that performance a memorable one: the ability to sing the sh!t out of that score. She didn't cut it.

Well, I think that it would be pointed to say that while some of you and some reviewers disliked/hated her performance and/or the film, it is not the conclusive consensus of either.
The film was on several Top 10 lists of 1996--including TIME.
The film did win 3 Golden Globes (fine if some of you don't think the GG are valid or that McDormand was ROBBED!) including Best Picture and Best Actress.
There are as many, if not more, BWWs who have spoken out in favor of the film and the performance to lend to my ear the notion that her doing the show live would be seen by many theatre fans as an exciting proposition.

"Madonna herself, playing a woman so fashionable that even her casket here is well-dressed, does rise glitteringly to this strange occasion. Fully inhabiting the role of Argentina's chic, noble demagogue, she holds sway over huge crowds and cuts an equally striking figure in the film's lonelier moments, like the hospital bed scene in which the pillow behind her appears to form angel's wings. (The real Evita's posthumous years as a beautiful corpse are not mentioned.) Her performance, which consists of cutting a glamorous swath through crowded settings and passionately feigning the emotions on the soundtrack, is legitimately stellar and full of fire. "

"Madonna Was Born To Play Eva Peron!" - Owen Gleiberman EW
"After a long and checkered movie career, Madonna finally realizes her blonde ambition in this big-screen adaptation of the rags-to-riches life story of Argentine legend Eva Peron. It's quite simply her finest moment both as an actress and a singer. She's aided by a sympathetic director in the music-minded Alan Parker, a memorable score by Time Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber and high-calibre performances by Antonio Bandares, Jonathan Pryce and Jimmy Nail. "

Many of the bad reviews came from people who didn't understand EVITA: Their gripes were with there being little to no dialogue. They complained about the facts portrayed in the film (which is the "fault" of the stage musical). A lot of people just don't have the knowledge that we do about a film's being adapted from a stage work and the context that comes with that. Maybe that's fair--a film of a play or musical must stand on it's own two feet.

Okay, I found SPEED THE PLOW to be rather a painful show to sit through. However, I thought Madonna was the best thing in it (let the bullets fly now). I thought she did a wonderful job in the EVITA film. Vocally, I would have much rather had Patti LuPone or someone with that caliber voice but acting wise, I feel that Madonna was tops. She brought something to the role that I have never seen before and that was Eva's vulnerability and fragileness. It's very easy to play Eva as a raving bitch but it is hard to show why she is so curt and strong.
I've said for quite some time not that she will probably do this role on the West End. She said that she wanted to do a musical there and EVITA revivals have been in major talks for a while now.
The EVITA role has affected her vocally as well and there can be absolutely no denying that. Before filming she actually studied voice very seriously with a well noted voice teacher and vocal coach. If you listen to her music from RAY OF LIGHT on you can actually hear that she is singing. Let's also not forget that she does indeed come from a theatrical background as well.
