Madonna might have sounded wonderful in the film (according to some, I thought she was very weak) but you have to remember that her voice was digitally enhanced in the studio.
There is a huge difference between singing in the studio with as many takes as necessary to get it right than singing live, eight shows a week with only one shot to blow the audience away.
I don't think she wouldn't last a week in this role without blowing her chords. It's too demanding for her. Madonna is a "package performer" much like Britney Spears. She is packaged beautifully but strip away the personal army of assistants and wardrobe, hair, makeup and studio magicians, and she just doesn't have the chops to handle a b-way lead like this.
I still enjoy her though and I would see it. I just don't
think she would be the best choice for Eva, is all.
******Off topic...just got invited to Tracie Thoms' bday party at her house tomorrow night! Aww.. will be so much fun. Can't wait to give her a big hug.*** So great!

In all fairness, LuPone only did 6 shows a week of Evita and I wouldn't expect Madonna to do anymore than that. (LuPone even said that ALW disliked women because of where he placed the music for Evita. LOL)
However, she has to realize that unless she blows the roof off with "A New Argentina" and then comes back after a 15 minute intermission and seduces the audience with "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" the show won't be worth watching.

"I know she did that Turn back old man from Godspell thing and was good!!
and wonderboy - I'm gonna look up past posts of yours - this one was that good!! and great Icon - Annie was my first OBC - as you can see I know NOTHING about Broadway - I've only been attending since 1977!!!!!! (eyes roll) I can still see the treadmill and Loudon on it during 'Easy Street"...and people applauding before the number ended..thrilling for a kid!" ~ voiceanth
Well, aren't you just a sweet thing! LOL
The original ANNIE was amazing, no matter what people may say. I was also privileged enough to be friends with Laurie Beechman, the original Star To Be among other roles in the show. Dorothy Loudon was an amazing performer and she is greatly missed. It breaks my heart every single time I watch her do "Fifty Percent" from BALLROOM on 'My Favorite Broadway : The Leading Ladies'. She seems so overwhelmed by the thunderous applause.

I never read reviews. I just know what I like. You could pull out a thousand reviews out of Madge's @ss and my stance will still remain:
I don't like Madonna in "Evita".
