I read a thread a while ago about some shows charging a lot of money to get the cast to sign a playbill you mail in- does anyone know what the numbers are currently? Spesificly, I'm thinking about getting my friend a signed come from away playbill since she loves the musical. Also, does anyone know of any shows that do it for free?

For shows who ask for money, it's actually a donation (like to Broadway Cares). You can message the show on social media and ask. They might request a $20 donation. It's usually not too much.
There’s a whole fanmail board, I’d check there for the full list, but off the top of my head: CFA, Mean Girls, Aladdin, Lion King, Frozen, MFL, Carousel, The Bands Visit, Spongebob: Free Hamilton doesn’t usually send back anything. Dear Evan Hansen: $75 OOTI: $20 Anastasia: $10-20 Hello, Dolly!: $100 Waitress currently has no playbills signed by the cast (I sent to them 2 months ago for a cast signed Kath McPhee playbill and they sent back my donation and a note saying that)
