Making money in the West End?

Whenever I read an article about producing, there are always references to horror stories about loosing money.

I love reading about producing and am wondering whether it is possible to make money in the West End? With weekly running cost can a show rake in money, can producers be millionaires this way and which shows currently do this?

Which shows do it?

Wicked, Billy Elliot, Les Mis, Phantom, Mamma Mia!, Lion King, Chicago, Dirty Dancing, Jersey Boys, War Horse, Legally Blonde.

Although, there are a lot more that struggle.

Generally you make a lot or loose a lot.

Now you have "investors" credited as producers because new musicals are so expensive to produce (typically 4-8 million) takes lots of people to put on a show, unless your Cameron Mackintosh!

Cameron is certainly who can say yes producing can make you money!

I wonder if La Cage, A Little Night Music and Sweet Charity have recouped?

Strange in the West End, unlike Broadway they seldom say when a show has made its money back

One of the biggest shows for 'investors' was Spring Awakening.

Just look in the programme at how many they are. That was produced by many including Kevin Spcaey and one half of the producing team of the James Bond movies!

La Cage and Night Music did not recoup. Sweet Charity probably won't.

In fact, I don't believe any of the Menier musical transfers have recouped in London.

Making money in the West End?

Some people have lost a lot of money investing in the WestEnd. Remember Mike Batt's The Hunting of the Snark ? Or Leonardo, which was sponsored by the government of Guam (was it Guam?) ... and also the Norwegians lost a small fortune with Which Witch.

I vote for a weekly publication of takings etc, just like Broadway. It's not absolute necessary info, but it makes nice reading for geeks like me ... I mean theatre buffs.
