Mamma Mia?

Posted: 10/7/05 at 10:43pmMy mom is coming to visit me in a few weeks and really wants to see Mamma Mia because she loves ABBA...I know a bunch of people hate the show, but I just realized something. I don't know a lot about the show but I know it involves a wedding, and now i'm worried. To make a long story short, my sister recently cancelled her wedding and my mother was/is devestated. Mom doesn't realize that the plot of the show involves a wedding, so I was just wondering, will this show turn my mother into an emotional wreck?? I'll be seeing it with my mom AND my sister and I really wan t to avoid World War Three. It may sound like a silly concern but I'd love some feedback! Thanks!

umm... yeah the show is about a wedding as is pretty obvious by, I dunno, just glancing at the show poster??? you know your loved ones better than we do. if you think they won't be able to handle it then cancel your plans. honestly, there's nothing any of us can do to predict the outcome of the situation... but, do report back as I love to hear about family quarrels...
maybe show them the website... http://www.mamma-mia.com/

The entire plot of the show doesn't necessarily revolve around the wedding, although it is a major element of the story. The conflict in the show has to do with a girl trying to discover who her real father is (there are three possible dads, and she spends the show trying to figure out which one is her biological father). There are other side plots, and facets to the story, as well as love interests for different characters, etc., but the whole thing leads up to this young woman's wedding, which happens towards the end. Another factor is that the lead characters mother is single, and never got married. Just another bit of information for you to consider. The show is a feel good musical, with happy endings all around, and it's a lot of fun. The ABBA music and light tone of the story keeps it from ever getting too serious. You'll spend a lot more time laughing and smiling than being sad. It's not heavy material at all. A lot of comedy, production numbers, and colorful sets and scenery. I would say not to worry about the subject matter, unless your mom is the type that will look for anything as an excuse to get upset. It's a tough call, but that's the scoop on the show.

I wouldn't worry about it to much, Mamma Mia is not to serious show and if your mother loves Abba, she will have a good time even if she won't care too much for the plot.
And to top it all, since its running for a pretty long time now you can easily get discounted tickets either at http://www.broadwaybox.com or at the TKTS.

To each his own, Buscee. Some people, well, a TON, possibly MILLIONS worldwide, have loved the show for seven years.
And now to actually answer the question in an unbitchy manner...
EverythingisRENT - I think the answer lies in why your mother was devastated about your sister's wedding.
**SPOILER**
The daughter doesn't get married in the end. The mother does and the daughter just runs off with her fiancee to tour Europe together before they decide on marriage.
**END SPOILER**
So if any of that mirrors your sister's wedding scenario, then I would go see Hairspray or Spelling Bee, both of which are lots of fun. And ignore those who think you should not see the show simply because they didn't like it. I think Mamma Mia's reputation speaks for itself. Personally, I find it difficult to see the show and NOT have fun unless you go into wanting to hate it, but that's just my opinion.
If you think your mother is sensitive enough about weddings that anything involving a wedding may set her off, then I think you have your answer.
