Well the movie opens on July 18 so I don't believe any reviews will be out until that weekend. I saw a screening yesterday and it was just okay for me. The acting was pretty good, but some of the ensemble numbers were way too cheesy. And Pierce Brosnan cannot sing.

I got a copy of the soundtrack....he's not good at all.
Like WickedOne2 said, the movie doesn't open until the 18th. There may be some advance/press screenings this week, but I don't think major papers will have reviews until that weekend.

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist.
Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino.
This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more.

One of my friends who is very into theatre saw an advance screening and said he was extremely disappointed. Granted, neither he nor I actually like the source material, but he said any hopes he had of the movie being good because of the cast or whatever were completely shot down.

Well, it opened here in Greece last Thursday, July 3 ! I still haven't gotten around to see it though, because the crowds are unbelievable !!! Trust us Greeks, any movie shot in Greece, will trump Indiana Joneses, Batmans, Iron-Mans and everything else in the Box Office !!! The word is really good and I may try to go tonight, I'll let you guys know what I think, though I am sure I'll love it, since I adore the stage show !

I love the stage version too and got to see a preview of the film. I also thought that the musical scenes were overcut. It just felt really choppy. It just wasn't as funny as the show. But in the group of people sitting near me (who I didn't know) all of them liked it.

Not necessarily, there is the possibilty of early reviews. Michael Philips and Richard Roeper do early reviews alot on Ebert and Roeper and plus there have been early reviews for Dark Knight and that doesn't come out until next week as well. Maybe the majority of reviews won't come out until next week, but there's always the chance of early reviews. I don't think Ebert submits his reviews until the week of, but then again I might be wrong.

Well maybe Dr. Jones and Iron Man, but there are two big factors to key in with Dark Knight. One is Heath Ledger, people who may not have been fans of comic book movies or Batman are going to go to see Heath's final film role. Two, Dark Knight is this summer's highly anticipated film, I mean Dr. Jones was highly anticipated too, but the anticipation for Dark Knight exceeds it and Dark Knight has been getting more postive reviews in early screenings then Crystal Skull has, and plus it's probably been set in stone that next weekend would belong to Batman and not Mamma Mia, as the majority of the film going crowd are going for Batman. Also, Dark Knight is the fastest pre sale of the summer on Fandango and many of the 12:01am shows have been sold out and to meet demand, some theaters have made 12:05, 12:10, and even 3am shows for the movie.

I've yet to see the stage production, but I did get to attend an advanced screening of the movie...it's cute, just be prepared to laugh (sometimes you'll be laughing WITH the movie, other times you'll be laughing AT the movie). But I left smiling, I'd recommend it as a fun movie.

My mistake, I should have clarified that I meant that, the movie will be #1 of the year in the GREEK Box Office !!! It has happened here with every movie that was shot or had something to do with Greece, like My Big Fat Greek Wedding, 300 and even the atrocious Captain Corelli's Mandolin ! As soon as we see anything Greek on a Hollywood film, we rush nationally to the cinemas LOL

A buddy saw one of the MAMMA MIA advance screenings, and said people were laughing out loud at Brosnan's singing.

The clips I have seen of this seem to be riddled with the same kind of clutzy non-direction that permeated GREASE 2 and CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC...y'know, the musicals that turned people against musicals in the eighties.

Well Here's my review :)
I just went to a screening of the film last night in Vegas and from the reaction of myself and the crowd this was a good ole' time at the movies last night. People even had to be turned away.
I thought the film was just delightful, it reminded me of "Hairspray", just a lot of fun. I had a smile on my face the whole time. It's not a perfect film, but for a first time director it was a damn good try.
Meryl Streep was fantastic as she normally is. I hate to admit it but I teared up during "slipping through my fingers". Just beautiful. Okay, Pierce Brosnan doesn't have the greatest voice, but his chemistry with streep is great. My personal favorite was Colin Firth, just hysterical. I really enjoyed the new placement of "Our last summer".
That's all I am going to say about the movie, so not to spoil any surprises. But if you want to have just a plain fun time, Mamma Mia! is it.

"The Hollywood Reporter" gave it a rave review. Comparing Meryl's musical performance to that of Barbra Streisand's Oscar winning performance in "Funny Girl."
At The Golden Globes next year, I'm sure that Meryl will win both Golden Globes - Best Actress/Musical or Comedy for "Mamma Mia." And, Best Actress/Drama for "Doubt."
