Mandy to find Paradise ath the Menier.

Mandy Patinkin, who brought his concert show to the West End last year (See News, 5 Nov 200Mandy to find Paradise ath the Menier., will star in the forthcoming new musical Paradise Found at the Menier Chocolate Factory, co-directed by Broadway legends Hal Prince and Susan Stroman.

The long-rumoured show (See The Goss, 2 Oct 2009), which premieres at the Chocolate Factory from 19 May to 26 June 2010, is based on the 1939 novel The Tale of the 1002nd Night by Austrian author Joseph Roth.

Set in Vienna during the Austro-Hungarian empire, the story centres on the Shah of Iran who, despite already having 139 wives, falls in love with the empress. The musical has a book by Richard Nelson and lyrics by Ellen Fitzhugh, set to the classical music of 'Waltz King' Johann Strauss Jr, adapted by Jonathan Tunick.

The show marks a return to London theatre for Broadway legend Hal Prince, whose myriad credits include The Phantom of the Opera, Evita, Fiddler on the Roof, Cabaret, Zorba and numerous Sondheim musicals. He last worked with choreographer Susan Stroman on a 1994 Broadway production of Show Boat. Stroman's other credits include Trevor Nunn's acclaimed National Theatre revival of Oklahoma!, for which she won an Olivier Award.

Patinkin, who plays the Shah's advise-doling eunuch, is likely to be joined by John Cullum (as the Shah), Shuler Hensley, Kate Baldwin and Judy Kaye, who took part in readings of the show in New York and are currently negotiating contracts.

Patinkin, who has enjoyed an illustrious career on stage and screen, first rose to prominence as a musical theatre actor, winning a Tony Award for his role as Che in Evita on Broadway in 1979. In 1984 he received another Tony nomination for Sondheims Sunday in the Park With George, and in 1989 starred in the first of a number of solo shows, Mandy Patinkin in Concert: Dress Casual.

What an incredible cast!

Anyone else remember Mandy's last appearance in a musical in the UK?

Let that be a little Friday quiz.

Was it in the musical based on Rhinoceros at Chichester?

Born Again I think it was called?

My guess too.

I didn't see it but it has always sounded intriguing.

Was it any good Dev?

You're both right and I loved it if that's any guide. Lots of stomping. Mandy was suitably intense.

Somewhere I once had a sound desk recording.

The programme was disappointingly low on pics though. I'll change my avatar to a pic from the production tomorrow!

Yes please!

Am I correct in thinking Jason Carr (who takes so much flack for reduced orchestrations) did the score?

I LOVE Mandy Patinkin - far and away my all-time favourite male singer. Just about the best night I've ever spent in a theatre was at his solo show at the Almeida back in the late 90s. Awesome doesn't even come close to describing his performance. When he sang Not A Day Goes By, it was one of the few times I have ever cried in the theatre.

I am willing to kill for a ticket for this show at the Choc Factory LOL.

Sounds like the Menier is being used as an out of town venue. Is this a good move?
His support cast must have all the patience in the world to work with him.

Thanks Dev - Born Again looks incredible!

"Sounds like the Menier is being used as an out of town venue. Is this a good move?"

Probably not. Although a similar attempt with Maltby and Shire's Take Flight didn't seem to hold them back. It will be interesting to see if Paradise Found works out.

The Menier seems to have changed tactics, and now releasing a 'season' and not just the new show close to when the current one is finishing.

A good move I think.

Ha, i was thinking the same, they seemed to operate the way all theatres across the country used to sell tickets years ago- just 4 to 6 weeks in advance. Now you can book most shows in regional theatres into next year!

Regarding the Menier though, I think it was a good thing to keep everyone guessing as to what they would present next. Maybe they have just been luck this year in getting copyrights etc cleared up faster than in the past.

Woo Hoo!

I've been checking the website every day. I booked my tickets on Thursday morning and then, about half an hour later, got the e-mail from the Menier with mailing list booking details.

Should I be excited by this, because im just not! Other than Kate Baldwin the cast doesnt excite me and the premise seems a bit random, with no original score. I think this will be a miss for me.
