Just came back home from seeing "Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me" in SF. Lots of funny stuff and funny songs. Seeing Marc Shaiman in drag made me think that he'd make a good Edna in "Hairspray". Anyone else agree or disagree?

he might read this and be tempted to make a video.
Do it Marc, do it!

That would be a wonderful thing to see and he certainly has the personality to shine on stage.
He is terrificly talent guy indeed for writing such a vibrant musical. I can't wait to hear what new material he has written for the movie of Hairspray. And I also can't wait to know if Hairspray will finally make it over here to London.

Spoiler Alert: The show had some "spot on" sendups of "Wicked", "Godspell", Joan Rivers, Ellen, Ms Spears. My favorite part was when Jiminy Glick arrived. I wish he was in the show longer but when he was there he was hysterical. They pulled this guy, Ethan from Fresno, out of the audience and he was great. Jiminy gave him a hard time about wearing jeans to the theatre and they did a little dance. Overall the show was lots of fun and a big plus after the other recent pre-Broadway disasters we have had here in SF. My only complaint is that there was a 25 minute intermission which is way too long since the first act is only about 55 minutes and the second is about 45. I want to see it in NY to see the changes they make between now and then.
I still think Marc would make a great Edna. Of course he will need extra padding.

Posted: 5/6/06 at 6:46pmmy guess is that the intermission length could have alot to do with jiminy glick's appearance, that makeup can't be that quick to get on

I've been saying for years that Marc and Scott would make a great Edna and Wilbur, respectively.

Posted: 5/6/06 at 9:40pmI don't think the intermission length is connected to Jiminy since he does not come on right after the intermission. The show picks up right at the same point where it left off with Martin Short and he is not Jiminy at that point. There is a very talented cast that is on stage a lot and they are also used when Martin is getting into costume.

I saw the show this afternoon, and I definitely think Shaiman could and should play Edna. He'd be fantastic! His little bio was hilarious, too. Makes me really excited for Catch Me if You Can, which I previously had no interest in.
The first act drags, but the second act is hilarious. Which one of the comedy stars was the Judy Garland impersonator? She was beyond fantastic.

jimmysf...
I can't believe you enjoyed this show more than Lestat! I saw it last Wednesday and was relieved when it ended. I admit I laughed at some of the jokes (and the opening was very promising), but this show had no "thread" of continuity at all, and the scenes went from one man show to celebrity impersonator showcase to a show within a show! Once he started in with the "Bi big titties" song, it went downhill with only brief climbs back up (Jimmy Glick and Garland most notably).
If I had to choose one to sit through again....I am sorry to report that it would be Lestat.

Oh, "Just Me"! Just when I was starting to like you.
How could you ever want to sit through "Lestat" again?

I didn't say I really liked Lestat, so don't worry about that.
I just can't believe you enjoyed the Martin Short show so much. It had a lot of the same problems as Lestat!

Posted: 5/9/06 at 3:50pmI didn't have the same high expectations going into see Martin Short that I had for "Lestat" (Elton John music, books I liked). I knew I was getting Martin Short and it might be hit or miss but I found it to be pretty funny overall. There were some parts that need work (this is the first of three out of town stops) but it wasn't the complete disaster/dissapointment as I felt "Lestat" was. I didn't feel like I was going to nod off at the Martin Short show but I can't say the same about that other show. Also, the routines that worked well were very funny; The spoofs of "Wicked", "Godspell", Tommy Tune, Bob Fosse, the Jiminy Glick routine, Joan Rivers, the song based upon the poem by the little girl from Rwanda are a few that come to mind. The guy they pulled out of the audience the night I saw it played along well. I guess that segment will depend upon the person who goes up on stage.

We were relieved when intermission finally came around...the skits right before it (about that damn snowball)were dragging.
I was a little surprised there was very little mention and only one number around his Saturday Night Live work (remember the terrible Ed Grimley on Drugs dancing with three actors representing John Belushi, Gilda Radner and I think Jane Curtin?) and correct me if I'm wrong here, but no SCTV mention?
Were we supposed to be watching a show within a show where Martin Short attempts to figure out what he'd do in a one man show? Or were we watching what he thought would be a good representation of his life? OR....was it all about the art of impersonating others? This was the question on my mind as I left the theater.
There were a few scenes and songs that kept my interest...in particular, I loved the "auditioning for the star directors" montage...especially the Tune on stilts guy. However, and this was something my friend remarked on as well...Short's attempts at what I presume was supposed to be humor about gay people were wince inducing and got very old, very fast. It was dissapointing to see someone so talented rely on old schtick like that.
Unless that was the point of the show...someone doing a parody of terrible one man shows.
