So I was reading that Maio Cantone was supposes to be the original Carmen in The Producers. I'm glad Roger did it!
Is Mario a trained singer? I heard that his vocals (what litle they were)in Assassins were not very impressive. I can't see a a non singer playing Carmen!
Who has heard him sing?

Mario Cantone and sing are two words I would never put together.
I cannot believe that he was expected to sing the Carmen music in the Producers! Maybe they rewrote it when Roger came on board.

"I'm glad Roger did it!"
You're not the only one who's glad, darling!

Posted: 9/19/04 at 12:03amHe is not really a singer! Saw him in Assassins. He annoys me but in Assassins, his portion was OK, although he screamed through it. When he opened his mouth to sing, I thought...."Well, It's Sondheim!"

Slightly off the topic and just FYI he has a new show opening in October at the Cort Theatre: Laugh Whore.

Thanks for the responses. But...
I'd love any ideas as to how he was cast as Carmen when he can not sing!
That is weird.

Posted: 9/19/04 at 9:40amHe was originally cast as Carmen because he is one of Broadway's leading flaming homosexuals, and not everyone has enough imagination to avoid obvious typecasting.

No, he can sing, just not in a very good way.

Posted: 9/19/04 at 1:42pmHe actually can sing.. check out the Fine and Dandy recording released earlier this year with Carolee Carmello, Gavin Creel, Jennifer Laura Thompson and Andrea Burns. He sings the title track duet with Carolee. He's not amazing by any stretch, but rather decent and VERY HIGH!

Posted: 9/19/04 at 2:19pmSaw him on The View after the Oscars. He was obnoxious and not funny. Hell, some of the comedians on Last Comics Standing are even funnier than him! I have no desire to see his show.
