I just discovered that there was a Sondheim show I was completely unaware of before today. It apparently played in the early 1980's and seems to be composed completely of songs cut or never used in previous Sondheim shows, worked in around a new story of some sort.
Has anyone seen this? Is it worth getting? It looks like it never made it to Broadway, but I suppose if it did, it would be eligible for Best Original Score since it is composed of all "new" songs, at least "new to Broadway". Right?

I love it, its a great pice, and while the performances are just ok, Craig Lucas isn't the best singer in the world (but he's a great playwright, so its ok), but it is the only place, I think, where you can hear the ENTIRE "Can That boy Foxtrot"
Fantastic cd! I think it's still in print. Seek it out.
Uptown/Downtown
It Wasn't Meant To Happen
So Many People
are some of the best song's he's written, IMO

Personally I think Two Fairy Tales and Silly People, both cut from A Little Night Music, are incredible pieces. I've sung SIlly People on a number of occasions, and it's always the song people ask me about the most. It's so haunting.
Two Fairy Tales is definitely in my list of top five Sondheim songs. Plus, it's cool to hear how 'Company' could have ended with Happily Ever After.
Yep, DeadParrot, if you can find the album, it's worth it!
I love Marry Me A Little. I saw it off-Broadway, and wow, those incredible songs. There was also a production years ago in West Hollywood that took a gay slant on the show, casting 2 men instead of the usual male/female casting.
This sounds great. Do you think I would be able to find the soundtrack at any FYE/Virgin etc or would I have to hunt online?
I found mine on Amazon. I actually paid way more than $14.99 though.
Amazon - Marry Me a Little
I just looked on Amazon and they have it new and in stock.
Not a bad price either- thanks!
Can't really stand Suzanne Henry on this recording, but Craig Lucas is oh so wonderful. His rendition of "It Wasn't Meant to Happen" is so touching and I just love his "Happily Ever After."
Cincy Playhouse In The Park is doing this show next season. I'll be there!
The two of them were entrancing in that little theater. I had been a Sondheim fan ever since seeing the original Company when I was 14, but Marry Me a Little seemed to be more about me than any other Sondheim show ever had been. I was 25 and single and broke and living in the East Village and thinking that my whole life was either incredibly exciting or incredibly depressing. The staging by Norman Rene was ingenious and the performances were endearing. And the songs were about my life.
It was the Avenue Q of 1981
Here it is on iTunes.
