Was it realy that bad? The cast recording is a little strange but what was the show like. I know it had problems in Toronto.

It actually got mostly raves here in NYC. It was last summer's equivalent to Xanadu: a surprisingly enjoyable show which was a perfect cure for the dog days of summer. Martin Short was fantastic as all of his best characters, Brooks Ashmanksas was a delight, the women were terrific, Capathia stopped the show at every performance, and Marc Shaiman appropriately hammed it up on the piano.
Personally, if I were a Tony nominator, I would have put up the show for Best Musical (it really was the best show of last season, IMO), along with Best Actor (Short surely would have won if nominated), as well as score, book, etc.

The show wasn't bad at all. It was a cute, fun, and funny show. It opened last summer during what was otherwise a dull summer.
I get the feeling from the CD that its very visual and knowing a little about Mr Short it needed to be seen live. I agree, there's some great numbers in it thanks to a certain person who had something to do with Hairspray!

Yes, it was indeed a very visual show. It loses a lot (from stage to disc) but Shaiman and co. did a great job of translating the material as best they could. Numbers like "Jackie Rogers, Jr. Show, "I Came Just As Soon As I Heard," and "Would You Like to Star in Our Show?" are the most effected, but the tunes (and impressions) are still great.
It's a very enjoyable album!
Too bad- I missed it... I enjoyed the music so much..

I don't think that Martin Short would have won best actor if he was nominated. My guess actually is that some of the votes that DHP got would have gone to Short which possibly would have meant a win for Raul.

i really enjoyed FAME BECOMES ME...& it was Mary Birdsong's broadway debut!!!!!
I saw it in it's pre-Browadway SF incarnation and was surprised when it did so well in New York. There were scenes and songs that were enjoyable, such as the number that included Martin's take on Fosse and Tune, but overall the show just didn't do it for me. I was particulary distubed about the "Big Big Titties" number, and thought it crass.
I was hoping to hear that it went through changes before landing in New York, but when I checked the song and scene sheets against the SF version, it appeared it was pretty much the same show.
Not every show is for everyone though! The audience around us in SF seemed to enjoy every minute of it!
I really enjoyed the show when I saw it in Toronto. I thought it was super funny .
