re: Mary Poppins Cast#1
Posted: 2/13/06 at 2:17pmYes, it's coming to Broadway, no there has not been any casting announced yet. It's early, and auditions didn't start that long ago.

Out of curiosity, Thes - where did you hear that? I've heard from several people that LMK is definitely NOT coming to Broadway with it, though there are conflicting reports as to why. Some say a disagreement with Cameron others say an irresistable offer to open a show in London...
But things in showbiz change on a dime, so if you have new news, I'd love to hear more!

A friend who works for a certain corporate theatrical producing office told me last week that LMK was indeed flying to Broadway, but in defense of what you have heard, he did say after some hard negotiations...

re: Mary Poppins Cast#19
Posted: 2/14/06 at 6:33amI heard that Cameron Mac had already pulled out/kicked out of the producing bit, it's all DIsney now apparently, THAT'S why they changed from the lovely Dweynters poster to their own one! That's what I heard.
re: Mary Poppins Cast#20
Posted: 2/14/06 at 9:55amI certainly hope that LMK is NOT coming to Broadway. Here is a fantastic role for a young American actress that would be taken away. And quite honestly I never really understood her being cast in "Fiddler". I was rather underwhelmed and could have thought of many NY girls just as good if not better. I never really understand when they bring people over (and to be fair bring Americans over to London) unless there is a completely even exchange (like in "WIW"). Although I will also say, that as wonderful as Maria Friedman, Michael Ball, Jill Paice and Angela Christian are, I have no doubt that wonderful actors could have been found in each of their prospective countries. Anyway, those are my thoughts.

Of the world's most famous ENGLISH nanny. Get over yourself. I will be truly surprised and very impressed if Laura Michelle Kelly opens Poppins on Broadway. I have heard from many different people that her time with the show was over and done. This past Sunday though, she was interviewed in the Times over here for her upcoming pop album and it mentioned, of her many upcoming projects "possibly reprising her Poppins on Broadway".
But, rumors of fallings out with Cameron aside (that I think stem from her deciding to announce her leaving date in the London run before renewal negotiations were completed), she has indicated in many interviews that she is done with theatre, at least for a while. She's pulling a Heather Headley, if you like. She has a pop album out in April and she is also talking of focussing on her film career. She's been steadily working from the age of 16 in musical theatre. I would imagine she now has the confidence AND the financial security to branch out in her career. And that, above everything else, is why I would be stunned to see her as Poppins again.

Sorry, but I don't need to "get over myself" at all. This is how I feel. There are sooo many deserving American actresses that could pull it off. Part of being an actor is being able to portray all different types of characters from all different parts of the world. It would be different in my mind if she was irreplaceable and the show just would not work without her...but sorry, I just don't see that at all. (If you noticed I also do not fully agree with Americans going to England for the same reasons.)
That being said, I am happy that her career has blossomed and I certainly wish her all the best. Lots of money can certainly change someones mind though.
re: Mary Poppins Cast#23
Posted: 2/14/06 at 10:18amWell I don't think there are 4 British actors who could do Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf even half as well as the current Broadway transfer. And I don't think there is an American cast that would be able to pull off History Boys.
re: Mary Poppins Cast#24
Posted: 2/14/06 at 10:24amI agree in those cases...I never said I was fully against it. Also, in those cases, you are bringing over the entire show as a transfer. In cases such as Mary Poppins we are talking about one character. Like I said, I could understand if the actor was a huge star or was absolutely irreplaceable. In my mind the guy playing Bert seemed to have oodles more star power than LMK. What about him? Anyway...time for me to get off to work.
