Mary Poppins Preview
re: Mary Poppins Preview -- possible spoiler#25
Posted: 3/1/06 at 12:25pmThe Disney people wanted the New Am for Mary Poppins. If Mary wasn't coming in, Lion King wouldn't have moved, but it made perfect sense all around.
re: Mary Poppins Preview -- possible spoiler#26
Posted: 3/1/06 at 12:26pmSo it's not moving because sales are slow then?
re: Mary Poppins Preview -- possible spoiler#27
Posted: 3/1/06 at 1:19pmLion King is not selling out every show like it used to. Obviously time takes its toll on even the biggest shows. This move makes the most sense for both shows and the New Am.

Posted: 3/1/06 at 5:08pmI haven't seen the show in London, but listening to the recording I hope they don't tone down the darker elements too much. I mean, they didn't tone down Lion King or Beauty and the Beast for Broadway from the film. I'm dying to see how they stage Temper Temper - we got no indication of that number at all last night.
re: Mary Poppins Preview -- possible spoiler#31
Posted: 3/1/06 at 5:51pmThe staging of Temper temper is unique to say the least. I think the number is great and I certainly hope they won't cut it out.
re: Mary Poppins Preview -- possible spoiler#32
Posted: 3/1/06 at 6:03pmMy question is, if they do keep "Temper, Temper" in (which I hope they do - in fact, I hope they don't lighten the show much at all), will they still have a golliwog as one of the toys? That might have been acceptable in England, but I somehow doubt it would go over too well here.
re: Mary Poppins Preview -- possible spoiler#33
Posted: 3/1/06 at 6:08pmI actually didn't realize what it was. I thought you were referring to the judge. opps!

Lion King is not selling out every show like it used to.
Well, it is as prone to the winter blues as every other open ended running show on Broadway. It always has been. Nothing new there.
re: Mary Poppins Preview -- possible spoiler#37
Posted: 3/1/06 at 6:40pmSorry - I should have explained that a golliwog is (as the link Gypsy posted will tell you) a doll made in the likeness of an anti-black caricature. It's much more familiar (and possibly acceptable?) to people in Britain than here in the U.S., but I was still surprised to see one featured as a character in the "Temper, Temper" sequence. I don't think it would be wise to feature one in the Broadway production.
re: Mary Poppins Preview -- possible spoiler#38
Posted: 3/1/06 at 6:51pmI didn't even realize there was a golliwog in the London production. In any case, I really enjoyed the show when I saw it (from very very far away), so I hope they don't change too much for the transfer. What's needed is a really good Poppins- the one I saw wasn't exactly sensational, and it took something from the show. And I really hope they don't soften her up too much.
re: Mary Poppins Preview -- possible spoiler#39
Posted: 3/1/06 at 7:11pmPlum, whom did you see as Poppins? I also hope they don't soften up the character - the best part about the books is that she is kind of a vain b*tch. I never realized it as a kid, but upon viewing the Disney movie recently, I think Julie Andrews subtly tries to capture that while still taking treacly marching orders from Disney. But in the London stage version, they definitely let the character's inner b*tch come out more, and I hope it stays that way.

Trust me a golliwog is totall unacceptable to most people in the UK.
However the show is set in Edwardian Britain. Shouldnt it stick to the time period? Also reagards "Sister Suffragette"..well it cant be in this version as its set in a different era from the film.
re: Mary Poppins Preview -- possible spoiler#41
Posted: 3/1/06 at 9:14pmI saw Scarlett Strallen, who was adequate but just seemed too young and not formidable enough in the role. Poppins doesn't need to be scary or anything, but she needs have...maybe stature is the right word; I don't know.

Depending on who you ask - Poppins is "absolutely" going to be played by:
Erin Dilly
Laura Michelle Kelly
Ruthie Henshall
which means it will probably be Barbara Cook.

That's what I got from her, too. She has the vain thing going on for sure, and sometimes she has an edge to her voice when she speaks to the children. She is sugar and spice.
I would prefer to see the stage Mary as she was in London, with even more of an edge to her personality. The movie has been done, so let's see some originality with this show.
