Mary Poppins in Toronto?

Since all Disney shows (minus Tarzan) have appeared in Toronto, is there any word whether Mary Poppins may be coming to Toronto.
I also wonder what Mirvish will do for their next season. I mean, Dirty Dancing occupies the Royal Alex, We Will Rock You at the Canon and now, Sound of Music at the Princess of Wales. Any free theatres for the Mirvishes?
I suppose maybe the Dancap people may pick it up... Any word about their upcoming season??

Posted: 12/24/07 at 4:46pmI don't know if it is going to be in Toronto. I do think that there might be a tour stip there when the tour gets underway in 2009.

I would be extremely surprised if there was ever a sitdown Mary Poppins in Toronto. It will make it's way here by tour though.
I would think that WWRY will only last through the summer, opening up the Canon for other shows in the 08/09 season (as Princess [Sound of Music] & Alex [Dirty Dancing] will be occupied). WWRY has been HEAVILY discounted for many months but keeps extending...I can only imagine that happening for too much longer.
There were pretty credible rumours of a return engagement of Mamma Mia! in summer '08 (after the Vegas company closes). I haven't heard anything lately and would only guess it could possibly make it into the Princess before The Sound of Music occupies if for tech in late July.
Dancap's upcoming season will include the pre-Broadway tryout of Dancin' and the rumoured pre-Broadway tryout of The Wiz (after San Francisco).

If MAMMA makes its way back to Toronto, it won't be able to go into the Princess if SOUND OF MUSIC is slotted there. The show was still doing well enough when it closed. I heard rumblings that the two reasons to close it were to give the market a break (and wait until the Toronto market was as strong as it was when MAMMA opened, again), and to give LORD OF THE RINGS less competition.
My gut says that if Craymer brings the show back to Toronto, she'll run it as long as possible. It will be interesting to see if she goes with Mirvish again, or if it comes in with Dancap or independently (just Littlestar producing). While I'd love to see it at the Alex again (loved that venue for this show), I think the Elgin would be equally appropriate.

From the Toronto Star:
Toronto will get spoonful of sugar TheStar.com - entertainment - Toronto will get spoonful of sugar
December 06, 2007
The recent news that a touring production of Mary Poppins, the musical, would open in Chicago in the spring of 2009 had some people wondering if Toronto would be an eventual destination for the production.
"Absolutely," Jack Eldon told the Star yesterday. And he ought to know, since he's the vice-president of touring for Disney Theatrical Productions.
"Toronto is one of our favourite cities," he said, "and of course Mary Poppins will be coming there. It's all a question of logistics, and when a theatre of the right size and scope is available to us."
With Aubrey Dan's Dancap Productions now a major player on the local scene in addition to the long-established Mirvish empire, it was a valid question as to who would get to present this blue-chip show.
"We would look at any proposal," said Eldon candidly, "but so far, we have been talking to the Mirvishes."
And while nothing is carved in stone, it certainly sounds like – allowing for the requisite spoonful of sugar – Mary Poppins might appear, perhaps, at the Princess of Wales Theatre in late 2009 or early 2010.

Posted: 12/25/07 at 8:56amthere are still rumours of a Wicked sitdown too, I wonder where that would end up if all the downtown theatres are full. No one seems to like to go all the way to Nort York for the theatrte up there.

When they opened the Chicago production it was after much talk. The producers of Wicked wanted to open it in another city but the qustion was where.
It ended up being between Chicago and Toronto. Toronto thought that if they got the first sit down production of Wicked after broadway then it would increase tourisim to the city. But, Chicago ended up getting it.
As a result The Mirvishes ( had wicked gone to Toronto It would have been in a Merivsh house) worked on Lord of the Rings to get tourists to come to Toronto. And look at how well that got them.

Mirvish would be lucky to get WICKED- better than the CRAP of Dirty Dancing, and the even larger piece of CRAP, We Will Rock You.
Mary Poppins may start a tour in the T. Dot, but it wont be a sit down.
