i agree, cary. i did see CCBB in person and while there were a few moments i did enjoy, i was overall not impressed in the least.
mary poppins, on the other hand, is really wonderful. sure, some of it is going to look glitzy or slightly overproduced or bright and obnoxious but let's not forget that it IS disney...all of those things come with the territory

Poppins can afford to be glitzy and showy and NOT look overdone. They're doing it well/right/good. No, I think they're doing it pretty perfectly.

Still wondering WHY Rebecca Luker wasn't cast in the title role? She could have done it with ease- remember, this isn't a film and distance and make-up work wonders. That poor wonam was certainly born at the wrong time and has been terribly undertilized in major shows- one only has to listen to her glorious Lily in "The Secret Garden" to hear what she can do. Disney was responsible for helping to clean up Times Square and bring people back to the area once again, but if they continue to miscast youngsters they have under contract, there won't be anything left to see(just imagine Hillary Duff or Lindsey Lohan as Mary-ugh). At least Laura Michelle Kelly won the Olivier for her performance and she truly did deserve to open the show in the US as she was originally promised. We can only hope and pray that no one gets the assinine idea of trying to bring "High School Musical" to the Broadway stage! The mere thought gives me hives!
