Mary Poppins: Box or Balcony

I'm planning a trip to the city this June and plan to see Mary Poppins on a Sunday night. After reading reviews, I wouldn't mind sitting in a box seat, but as I live in Minneapolis, I can't casually buy one now. If I go day of, will they have box seats for 2 people left would you think? Or would I be better off just buying the cheapest balcony seats.

And can someone tell me how bad it really is sitting behind the poles in the balcony? If the front of the balcony is empty, do the ushers let you move up?

I've only sat in the box seats, but they were perfect.

Things you need to know about Mary Poppins. They base the show off of the books. So if you are going having loved the disney movie all these years. You might not like the show that well! I would sit in the balc. And I would say you would have a good chance on day of the show to get balc tixs. You might even stop in at the TKTS booth for discounted ones!

I sat right at the front of the balcony, and Mary Poppins flew right up there and smiled at me. The way the balcony is set up, there's no way someone can block your view. definitely balcony

Funny,I was going to ask how the view was from the balcony cause I have tickets to see the wednesday matinee next week.

If you get box seats, make sure you get the ones further back, like 11 and 13.

If you have long legs and you're sitting in the balcony, its MISERABLE. So just take that into consideration. :)

I've sat in Box 1 and it was amazing. I recommend being off to the side in a box seat than being far back in the balcony. If you can get Box 2 or 4 on the opposite side, Mary will fly right by you.

The boxes are great. I really liked sitting in the front boxes on either side (sat there twice). Each side has its good and bad points. The left (house left) has a better overall view.

I don't think there's any real bad views for Mary Poppins. The sets are huge enough that you'll get the full effect no matter where you sit. That little effect at the end of the show also helps bring you closer to the show even if you're way up there.

Hey, while all the posts here are pretty true overall, I actually work in the New Amsterdam Theater so I'll add to the scoop. I've sat in the forward box on the left and hated it. You kinda have to lean over the side to see everything and I found it annoying. Like someone else said, there are no real bad views in the theater, but views can be a bit weird in the boxes whereas the balcony seats, though a bit cramped (the long leg comment is true), still yield good views.

Although this wasn't your question, kinda just replying to someone elses comment, but the show is based more on the first three books than the movie. Almost all of the elements from the movie are there but there are lots of new songs and they've changed some of the storylines. But the way I see it, you don't want to just see the movie onstage, you want something a little different. So yea, hope this helps, and I really hope u enjoy it. I've seen the show dozens and dozens and dozens of times by now working there but I still think it is a great show!!!

I was in the balcony row B and I could see perfectly. The people in the boxes were practically dangling over the sides to be able to see.
