Let's not forget, a lot of critics gave the show BETTER reviews when Billie Joe was in than when Tony was. Tony was great, I love his performance, but I wish I could have seen Billie Joe's, because I've always been a Green Day fan.
I'm curious about the Etheridge effect. Will the part of St. Jimmy prove to be a one-size-fits-all role for guest rock stars with a taste for acting, or will it fall flat? Is Billie Joe's success in the role a fluke?
I'll tell you one thing. Adam Lambert would be cool, like someone suggested earlier, but the one person I think would make a great St. Jimmy despite being too high-caliber of a star to take time to do a guest role on Broadway would be Jim Carrey. The antic weirdness he's so often associated with kind of works for the part, since there's always a somewhat dangerous, sinister aspect to it. And as for the serious moments in the show (really I'm only thinking of Last Night on Earth for Jimmy), Carrey's only other setting is plaintive, somewhat whimsical depression.
And the man can sing!
I have a ticket for her first performance on Tuesday night, so I'll definitely report back. I'm not sure how it's going to work but I'm really interested to find out.
